Professor Gao Kun is known as the "father of optical fiber" by the world, and once served as the president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. 1990 was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Engineering.

Professor Gao Kun was awarded the Ericsson International Award and Marconi International Scholarship. He was awarded the Order of Prince Philip of the Royal Academy of Engineering (1996).

Professor Gao Kun's "Optical Fiber Science" has been widely used all over the world, and it has been listed in the "Most Popular 10 Products in the 20th Century" jointly organized by Hong Kong Intellectual Property Office and Hong Kong Faming Association. He was also awarded the "1999 Charles Stark Draper Award" by the National Institute of Engineering and Technology. This is the highest honor for outstanding achievements in American engineering. His idea and the development of optical fiber communication will lead to a telecom revolution.

Gao Kun was born in Shanghai, China on 1933. He received his bachelor's degree and doctor's degree in electrical engineering from London University in 1957 and 1965 respectively. 1957, he joined ITT company and worked as an engineer in Standard Telephone and Cable Co., Ltd. of a British company. 1960, he joined ITT's European Central Research Institute-Standard Verification Co., Ltd. in Britain, where he served for ten years, and his position was promoted from research scientist to research economics.
