In 1812, due to the invention of new and better pencil-making machines by American William Monroe and his assistants, the United States also began to mass-produce commercial pencils. In 1858, a Philadelphia inventor named Hyman Lippmann made the final improvement to the pencil, which was to glue a small eraser tip to the top of the pencil. He sold the patent in 1872. The eraser tip was actually attached to the pencil with a small metal ferrule.
