China’s first independently designed and built nuclear power plant is the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant.
The first phase of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant has a power generation capacity of 300,000 kilowatts. It uses an internationally mature pressurized water reactor. Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant is mainly composed of seven parts: wastewater treatment, water supply and drainage, front area, core part, etc. Nuclear power plants always give top priority to safety, and three barriers are set up inside the plant. The first pass is a zirconium alloy tube sealing pellet to form the fuel element. The second barrier is the high-pressure vessel and a closed primary loop system; the third barrier is the sealed enclosure, which can automatically shut down and cool the core in the event of a reactor accident.
The construction of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant started on March 20, 1985 and was completed on December 15, 1991. The completion of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant has made a breakthrough in the history of China's nuclear power. It marks the beginning of China's nuclear power journey and is known as the glory of the country. The completion of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant also marks that the development of China's nuclear industry has entered a new stage. It makes China the only country that can design and build nuclear power plants on its own, following seven countries including the United States, Britain, Japan and France.
Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant is operated and managed in accordance with international standards, and from time to time it conducts assessments of whether nuclear facilities meet comprehensive international performance indicators, aiming to meet the standards of global advanced nuclear power plants. Through the introduction and application of internationally advanced management methods, the safe operation level of nuclear power plants has been continuously improved.
After 14 years of operation, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant already has a high-level nuclear operation and maintenance team. Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant has various professional and technical personnel, including more than 130 senior professional and technical personnel and more than 220 intermediate technical personnel. It has established a complete operation and management system for systematic training, authorized employment and regular retraining. As the earliest talent training base in the nuclear field in China, it not only cultivates a large number of high-quality employees, but also provides a large number of technical talents for the development of the national nuclear industry. Units such as Qinshan Phase II and Qinshan Phase III have a large number of nuclear energy technology and operation management talents trained by Taishan Nuclear Power Station for the nuclear industry.
