What exactly is a relic?

The relic is not a stone, but a product of bone recrystallization when human bones are cremated.

What is a relic? According to Buddhism, a monk with high moral integrity can produce colorful crystals when he is cremated after death. Among these crystals, black is a hair relic, white is a bone relic, red is a muscle relic, and amber is a brain relic. It is said that the centenarian monk of Dakaiyuan Temple in Fujian was reluctant to spend a penny on the temple before his death. After his death, he was cremated and found many relics, reflecting like a mirror under the flashlight. Considering that there are many Buddhists, Buddhist relics are sought after and worshipped, which involves many interests. Scientists just hold the attitude of seeing through Buddhist relics.

The formation principle of the remains is not complicated. Scientists observed the bones of 1-97-year-old people with scanning electron microscope, and took samples for thermal induction. In the above picture, A is a bone sample with younger bone age, and B is a bone sample with older bone age, which are heated at 200℃ to 1200℃ for a certain time respectively. At 200 degrees Celsius, bones deform and shrink. When the temperature gradually rises to 400 degrees Celsius, the organic components in the bones begin to recombine. When the temperature rises to 600 degrees Celsius, the bones recombine into crystals. These crystals have various shapes such as triangles, circles, polygons and other irregular shapes. From 600℃ to 1200℃, this recrystallization phenomenon became more and more obvious, and the crystal began to grow. When the temperature rises to 1600℃, many crystals begin to melt and become spherical. The change of ultrastructure makes calcium carbonate and salts in bones combine to form crystals of different colors, which are called remains.

The relic is not a gift from the Buddha, but a crystal formed by a scientific phenomenon. This kind of crystal can know the composition of elements with an element analyzer, and there is no mystery. Besides phosphate, silicate and calcium carbonate, there are many oxides in the remains, such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, SO2 and P2O5. Some people think that the formation of relics is caused by stones in the body, and there are some loopholes in this explanation. Because the remains are colorful, and most stones are yellow.

It is difficult to explain the red, blue and amber of this relic. Moreover, many Buddhists only eat vegetarian food for a long time, but in the long run, there will be a lack of animal fat in the human body, and bile secretion will become less and thicker, which will combine with oxalic acid in vegetarian dishes to form calcium oxalate kidney calculi. The chemical composition of the relic is mainly silicate and phosphate, and calcium salt is rare, so the statement that the stone is a relic is untenable.

As for the formation of relics, I believe that most of them are artificially made in the market. In 2008, someone specially applied for the invention patent made by relic, which can be found in China Intellectual Property official website.
