The school was formerly the Jiangxi Provincial Senior Vocational School founded in 1994. In 1999, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to become a general higher vocational college and renamed Lantian Vocational and Technical College. In 2005, it was upgraded to a general undergraduate college. It was renamed Jiangxi Lantian University and was approved as a bachelor's degree-granting unit in 2009. In 2012, it was renamed Jiangxi University of Science and Technology.
