"lt;Historical Recordsgt;Study" 16: Zhou Benji (6)

King Li of Zhou Dynasty, reigned from 879 BC to 843 BC. He was greedy for money and favored profit, and was close to Duke Rongyi and others. The doctor Rui Liangfu advised King Li: "If this continues, our Zhou Dynasty may decline! That Rong Gong loves profit but does not know that disaster is coming. The interests of heaven and earth are generated by all things, so they should be controlled by the world. Everyone enjoys it. Duke Rong advises His Majesty to implement the patent system, which is very harmful. Everyone has a share in everything in the world and has the right to claim it legitimately. What is the legal basis for implementing a national patent system? It will arouse the resentment of the people, and if it continues, it may cause turmoil in the country. The reason why our Zhou Dynasty has been able to prosper to this day is because the kings of all dynasties have allowed ordinary people to occupy the resources of mountains, rivers and lakes for their own benefit. The crime of theft. The patent system implemented by your Majesty is rare in the world. If you continue to use Rong Gong, the Great Zhou Dynasty will definitely fail." King Li did not listen at all, and still appointed Rong Gong as the minister of state, responsible for managing national affairs.

King Li acted violently and unethically, and the people discussed and criticized him endlessly. Duke Zhao advised King Li: "Now the people are in dire straits." After hearing this, King Li became furious and found a wizard who was defending the country and asked him to supervise those who slandered the court. As soon as there was a report, he would be arrested and killed immediately. Sure enough, no one dared to slander publicly anymore, but the princes also stopped coming to perform Hajj. In the thirty-fourth year of King Zhou Li (846 BC), his restrictions on speech became even more severe. People did not dare to say a word to each other, and they could only communicate with each other with eyes when they met on the road.

King Zhou Li was overjoyed after hearing the report. He happily told Duke Zhao: "I can stop the slander and see who is still talking nonsense." Duke Zhao said: "This is just to use force to stop the slander." Just block what people want to say. Preventing the people's mouth is better than guarding the river. If the water accumulates and collapses, many people will be hurt. The same is true for the people. Only by using diversion methods can the people dare to tell the truth. Improve state affairs. In ancient times, virtuous emperors would ask ministers to collect folk poems and songs, even some of which were clearly satirical, and then ask blind people to present songs and historians to present books, so that all officials could directly When admonishing, the common people can also convey their wishes to the emperor, and finally the emperor will carefully consider and act. Only in this way can things be implemented smoothly and unnecessary mistakes can be avoided. The people can speak, just like the mountains and rivers on the earth. Wealth, goods and utensils are produced from there; the people can use their mouths and speak, and it is like the land with fertile fields and fertile fields. Clothes and food are also produced from there. What the people think in their hearts can say, and they will put it into practice after thinking about it. . How can it last long if you block their mouths?"

King Li refused to listen to the dissuasion. From then on, the people did not dare to speak. Three years later, the unbearable people united to rebel. They took up arms one after another and organized armed attacks on King Zhou Li, which was known in history as the "Chinese Rebellion".

Prince Jing of King Zhou Li hid in Zhaogong's house. After the rioting countrymen heard about it, they surrounded Zhao Gong's mansion. Duke Zhao said: "It turns out that I tried my best to dissuade King Li, but he refused to listen, which is why today's disaster happened. If the prince is killed now, then the king must think that we hate him and fail to fulfill our responsibility to protect the prince. As a country, A loyal minister should stand up when faced with danger, but he should not be angry if he complains, not to mention that the country is now facing a major danger!" Duke Zhao offered his son to die in the place of the crown prince, and the crown prince fortunately survived.

In 841 BC, King Li did not dare to return to the capital, and the crown prince did not dare to inherit the throne. Duke Zhao and Duke Zhou were in power together, known as "Zhou Zhao's Harmony". This is the beginning of precise chronology in our country. In the 14th year of the Han Dynasty, King Zhou Li died in the land of pigs. Prince Jing Zai Zhaogong grew up, and the two kingdoms supported him to inherit the throne. He became King Xuan of Zhou (? - 783 BC).

With the assistance of the two countries, King Xuan of Zhou reorganized the political order and followed the legacy of King Wen, King Wu, King Cheng, and King Kang. The princes came to pay homage one after another, which was known in history as "King Xuan Zhongxing". In the twelfth year, Duke Wu of Lu came to the Zhou capital for pilgrimage.

Queen Jiang of King Xuan of Zhou was the daughter of the king of Qi. King Xuan of Zhou often went to bed early and got up late, neglecting government affairs. Empress Jiang then took off her earrings and hairpins and came to Yongxiang to plead guilty, and asked Fu's mother to tell King Zhou Xuan that she had made King Zhou Xuan lustful and made the king neglect the government. This was the reason for her apology. King Zhou Xuan was greatly moved when he heard about it, and he worked diligently in government affairs from then on. This is the story of "Queen Jiang taking off her hairpin".

King Zhou Xuan was very mediocre in his later years. He liked to be militaristic and launched many foreign wars, but most of them ended in failure. He did not follow the original regulations to cultivate the land of one thousand acres. Duke Wen of Guo tried his best to persuade him, but King Xuan of Zhou refused to listen. In the thirty-ninth year, the Zhou Dynasty's army and Jiang Rong's troops fought in Qianmu. The Zhou Dynasty's army returned with a great defeat and was almost completely wiped out.

King Zhou Xuan lost his elite army, so he ordered to go to Taiyuan and other places to check household registrations and prepare to replenish the army. Zhongshanfu advised: "The people in Taiyuan cannot be counted." King Xuan did not listen to the advice and still conducted an inventory and conscription.

In the forty-sixth year, King Zhou Xuan died, and his son Youwang Gongyang (sound shēng, born) succeeded to the throne. In the second year of King You of Zhou (795 BC - 771 BC), a strong earthquake occurred in Sanchuan of the Zhou Dynasty, which aroused great vigilance in the government and the public. Three years later, King You of Zhou favored a concubine named Bao Si. Bao Si gave birth to a son, Bo Fu. The mother of the queen and crown prince Yijiu at that time was the daughter of Marquis Shen. King You wanted to depose the crown prince and queen so that Bao Si and Bo Fu could take the throne.

During the time of King Xuan of Zhou, some little girls often sang a children's song: "The moon is about to rise, the sun is about to set; a mulberry bow, a dustpan bag; if these things come out, it will bring disaster to Zhou." King Xuan of Zhou heard this During the song, there happened to be a couple selling mulberry bows and quiver wood, so he ordered people to arrest them. The couple fled to the road and accidentally picked up an abandoned baby girl. They heard her crying in the middle of the night and took her in. The couple finally fled to Baoguo. This girl is born with beauty and becomes extremely beautiful when she grows up. Later, the people of Baoguo offended the Zhou Dynasty, so they dedicated the girl to King Zhou Li to atone for their sins. Because she was presented by Baoguo, they called her Baosi. Si (sound sì, four) is her surname.

In the third year of King Zhou You's reign, he accidentally wandered around the harem. After seeing this woman, he fell in love with her and gave birth to his son Bofu. In the end, he deposed the queen and the prince and made Bao Si his wife. Queen, Bofu became the prince. Taishiguan Boyang wrote with emotion: "The Zhou Dynasty is about to perish. The chaos has been caused and the situation is irreversible!"

Bao Si rarely smiles, so King You tried his best to please her. Tried various methods, but still to no avail. In order to make Bao Si smile, King You of Zhou even sent people to light the beacon that could only be ignited when the enemy arrived. After the princes saw the beacon fire, they all rushed over with their troops. After arriving, he didn't see any signs of hostility. Bao Si actually laughed after seeing it. King You was very happy and sent people to light beacon fire many times in the future, but the princes were no longer fooled. This is the story of "the beacon fire plays on the princes".

King You of Zhou appointed Guo Shifu as Minister of State to be in charge of national affairs. Guo Shi's father was treacherous and greedy for money, and the people complained one after another. After Queen Shen and the prince were deposed, Marquis Shen was furious, so he united with Zan and Quanrong to send troops to attack King Zhou You. King Zhou You was panicked when he saw it, and quickly sent people to light the beacon fire, but no princes came again. The coalition forces killed King You of Zhou at the foot of Mount Li, captured Bao Si, and then withdrew after looting the capital of Zhou. After the princes learned about this, they were led by Shenhou and supported the original prince Yijiu to succeed him. He was King Ping of Zhou.
