The school's predecessor was the Shanxi Provincial Accounting School established in 1963. On this basis, the Shanxi Provincial Finance and Taxation College was established in 1985 and is affiliated with the Shanxi Provincial Department of Finance. In 2002, with the approval of the Shanxi Provincial People's Government, the school and Taiyuan University of Technology jointly established the School of Finance and Economics of Taiyuan University of Technology.
