Was bigamy abolished in 2023?

So far, bigamy has not been abolished in China. Although some lawyers and scholars have called for amendments, the law has not changed substantially.

Bigamy refers to the act of marrying, cohabiting or incest with a spouse. Belonging to the crime of marriage and family in China's criminal law, it involves many issues such as family morality and social security. Today, the crime of bigamy still exists, which is one of the crimes clearly stipulated in the criminal law. Nevertheless, in the public and professional circles, there are still some calls for amending the crime of bigamy. Some people think that in today's social background, monogamy has been gradually weakened, and the abolition of bigamy crime is helpful to protect marriage freedom and human rights, making marriage law more in line with the needs of modern social development. However, some people worry that if bigamy is abolished, it may bring more confusion and controversy to the field of marriage and family. Generally speaking, although there are disputes and discussions on the relevant laws and policies of bigamy, the relevant provisions have not been substantially cancelled or revised so far.

If someone is suspected of bigamy, what kind of punishment will he receive? According to the provisions of China's criminal law, cases suspected of bigamy can be examined and prosecuted in accordance with relevant regulations, and the suspects can be convicted and punished. According to the provisions of the criminal law, the crime of bigamy is serious in terms of charges and nature, involving family ethics, social morality and other aspects, and needs to be severely punished. Specific punishment measures include criminal detention, fixed-term imprisonment and fines, which may also affect the handling and consequences of marriage and family relations.

In today's social background, there are many different voices and opinions on whether bigamy should be abolished. For individuals, we should abide by the relevant marriage and family laws, cherish marriage, maintain family harmony, and avoid legal risks and tragedies caused by illegal acts.

Legal basis:
