The school was formerly known as Southwest University of Political Science and Law, formerly known as Southwest People's Revolutionary University. It was founded in 1950, with Marshal Liu Bocheng as its president. In 1953, the law school (department) was formally established based on the Department of Political Science and Law of Southwest People's Revolutionary University and merged with Chongqing University, Sichuan University, Guizhou University, Yunnan University, and Chongqing University of Finance and Economics.
