Erlang God Yang Jian is the nephew of the Jade Emperor. He once rebelled against the gods to save his mother and tried to stop his nephew Aquilaria sinensis from saving his mother. Yang Jian is also the god of war in China mythology. As the nephew of the jade emperor, his relationship with the jade emperor is not good. "Listen to the tune but don't listen to the announcement" is the expression of extreme personality, somewhat similar to his opponent the Monkey King. The Jade Emperor named Yang Jian "the king of heroes, heroes, wishes, sages and blessings", and the road number was "Qingyuan, Miaodao and Zhenwang", but he always ignored this uncle and resolutely refused to live in heaven. Instead, he was sent down to the world with incense. He was accompanied by six saints of Meishan in front of his account, and he was a grass-headed god of more than 1,200 people, who listened to the Jade Emperor.
Yang Jian is described as "pure and delicate" in classical mythology, which is no different from Yang Jian wearing a cloud crown, a moist skirt, a silk sash around her waist and stepping on Ma Xie in The Romance of the Gods. The only possibility is that Ma Xie changed his brocade boots. Yang Jian is also a proud man. "I lost with him, so I don't need to help him." I hit him, and Liegong doesn't need help. "You can see from this sentence. Because he is a hero with indomitable spirit, the Han people are respectful to him, which is one of the best. There are many legends about his birth, which are rare in Han folk customs.

This poem is a description of the true gentleman of Jiro in The Journey to the West, which has both form and spirit. The heroic image of Erlang God Yang Jian is vivid. However, what is the life experience of this immortal who is known as the "true king of Erlang God"? When and where did he spread to this day?
First of all, judging from the poem written by Wu Cheng'en in The Journey to the West, at least in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the legend of Erlang God was familiar to the Han people, so this poem is just a general description, and there is no explanation or annotation in the book. But up to now, a lot of legends about Erlang God have been submerged. As the poem says, "the axe splits the peach mountain" is still known, and "the phoenix" is unintelligible.
Secondly, Yang Jian's birth is the product of an affair. It is said that his mother is the jade emperor's sister. She secretly came to the world because she envied human feelings, made friends with Yang, a scholar, and became friends with Yang. And gave birth to a son, Emperor Wen of Sui.
Erlang God had the deeds of chopping a mountain to save his mother, but the mountain he chopped was Taoshan, and the weapon he used was an axe. According to The Journey to the West's records, Erlang's mother is the younger sister of the Jade Emperor, and she married a man named Yang on earth. Their son's name is Yang Jian, which is what we call Erlang. The jade emperor was furious because his sister married a mortal, so he put his sister (the mother of Erlang God) at the foot of Taoshan Mountain. Later, Erlang Shen (nephew of the Jade Emperor) "cut down Taoshan with an axe" and saved his mother. There are also several different versions of "Saving Mother by Breaking the Mountain". At the beginning, the story of "cutting down a mountain to save mother" was definitely about Yang Jian, but later it was added to the story and changed to the story of "Lotus Lantern". This statement is well-founded, because the story of "Erlang axe chopping Taoshan to save mother" has obvious ancient myth color, while the story of Aquilaria sinensis is obviously much more fashionable and formed later. But when we compare them, we will find that the two stories come down in one continuous line, including the relationship between the characters is also mother and son, nephew and uncle.
"Jiro Bao Juan" mainly describes the birth history of Jiro Zhenjun: Yang Tianyou, the father of Jiro God, is a "golden boy" in heaven and a scholar in Quezhou City. Mother Yun Huaxian fell in love with her old love, married Yang Tianyou privately, and gave birth to Jiro Zhenjun. Because she violated the dogma, she was trapped in Guo Hua by Monkey and was crushed under Mount Tai. Later, Erlang God was instructed by the Queen Mother of the West to "go up the mountain to catch the sun", split the mountain to save his mother Yun Huaxian, and turned to Mount Tai to crush Sun Walker. "Jiro Bao Juan" describes Jiro Shen's rescue of his mother: "Mountain axe, double-edged knife, silver bullet, golden bow; Ascend to heaven, ride the clouds, and walk the clouds; Tie the demon lock, cut the magic sword, and have all the eight treasures. Look at the demon mirror, look at the devil, and the six thieves surrender; Three mountain hats, combative, topped with Three Lamps District; Eight treasures, four belts, and a waist; The yellow robe is covered with eight-claw dragons, and the purple fog is filled. " (See "Jiro Bao Juan, Begging to Sign the 10th Made in Guangxi") "Jiro turned into a magical power, and then I went out to get my teeth closed, and the young man protected me. After accepting the seven saints as guardians, the white horse and the white dog have their own reasons ... Meishan worships seven times and worships brothers. Handsome generals will always support them, and heaven and earth will become sacred with spring. A white horse rides on a horse, followed by a white dog. Guan Jiang sent demons to catch ghosts, and the evil spirits disappeared. " (See Jiro Bao Juan. The image of Erlang God depicted in "Jiro Bao Juan" is very similar to the image of Erlang God in The Journey to the West, in which the spelling of "treating teeth" is the same as that of Erlang God's zaju since the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, while "white dog has a god" is in the shape of a white elephant with the "thin dog" in the Romance of the Gods.
3. Detailed introduction of editing
Legend of origin
It is said that "Erlang God" is in charge of water, and more Erlang temples have been built in various places since the Song Dynasty.
However, it is a difficult problem to ask what the surname and name of this "Erlang God" is. That is to say, taking the Erlang Temple in Guankou as an example, the contradictions caused by various opinions are reflected here: according to the record of searching for gods in the Origin of Three Religions, this temple should be a Taoist temple, and Erlang gods are Zhao Yu and Zhao Erlang, who were posthumously named as "the true king of Qingyuan Miao Dao" in Song Zhenzong; However, the statue of Erlang God in this temple was a young husband, wearing a helmet and armor, and did not need powder. The most striking thing is that he has an eye on his forehead, a three-pointed double-edged knife and a roaring dog in front of his soap boots, which makes people know that this is Jiro Yang Jian depicted in Journey to the West. Surprisingly, scholars of all ages praised Erlang God as the son of Li Bing, the guardian of Shu County in pre-Qin Dynasty, for the plaques, couplets and stone carvings embedded in the temple walls. If you have an inquisitive pilgrim, you have to be vague: anyway, you worship "Erlang God".
Who is the true identity of Erlang God, or in other words, how did the belief in Erlang God spread from Sichuan to the whole country?
There are various theories in history, and modern scholars have a lot of textual research and inference.

Li Bing is the commander-in-chief of Qin and Shu. During his tenure, he led the people to build Dujiangyan, and his merits lasted for thousands of years. According to the folklore of the Han nationality in central Sichuan, in this huge project, his second son, Jiro, helped his father to dig out a pile of stones and open a second river, which made great contributions, so he was regarded as a god by the people. Such a legend can be found in written records, which seems to have started in the Northern Song Dynasty. Song Yaohui records that in the eighth year of Jiayou, the god of Guangji Wang Temple of Yongkang Army was sealed as Hui, and called "God as the second son of Li Bing", which shows that "Erlang" means the second son. Fan Chengda, an envoy of Sichuan before the Southern Song Dynasty, probably visited this "Langjun God". His "Wu Luchuan" said: "Chongde Temple is on the mountain outside the west gate of (Yongkang) Army (now Guankou Town), and Qin Taishou Li Bing and his son temple are also eating." The Popular Compilation quoted Zhu Zi's Quotations and further pointed out: "The Erlang Temple in Shuguankou was built because Li Bing left the heap. Nowadays, many ghosts are his second son. " Later, this Erlang was awarded the title of "Hero CHO HYE SUN Saint Wang You" by the Yuan Dynasty and the title of "King of England with Outstanding Achievements" by the Qing Dynasty. When Yong Zhengdi, the governor of Sichuan, gave Jiro the title, the Ministry of Rites thought it was inappropriate to seal his son instead of his father, so Yongzheng also sealed Li Bing with "Fuze Jixing Tong Wang You" ("The General Examination of Literature in Qing Dynasty, Group Sacrifice Examination II"). This is why the original name of Erlang Temple at Guankou was changed from Chongde Temple to Erwang Temple. Due to the seal of the emperor and the records of local chronicles, the saying that Li Erlang enjoyed offering sacrifices and pouring water has been spread all over the country for a long time, especially supported by scholars who pay attention to quoting classics.

According to the Records of Longcheng cited in Volume 39 of Ancient and Modern Books and Nerves, there was a Zhao Yu in the Sui Dynasty who lived in seclusion in Qingcheng Mountain and worshipped the satrap of Sichuan history at the end of Sui Dynasty. Sometimes the old dumplings make waves and become a scourge. Zhao Yu jumped into the river with a knife, drowned in the water and struggled with Lao Jiao. In an instant, the river was all red, and the stone embankment collapsed and roared like thunder. Finally, Zhao Yu rushed out with jiaozi's head in his left hand and a knife in his right. So the people of the state wore them and regarded them as gods. Later, Zhao Yu abandoned his official position and retired, but when Jialing River flooded, he showed his spirit several times. After learning from the memorial of local officials, Emperor Taizong named him a brave general and built a temple for him at the mouth of Guanjiang River. Later, when Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty fled to Sichuan to escape the Anshi Rebellion, he also sealed the King of Chicheng. According to scholars' research, The Story of Dragon City was written by Wang Luo, a poet in the Song Dynasty, under the pseudonym Liu Zongyuan in the Tang Dynasty. The story about Zhao chopping jiaozi in the river should have been circulated in the Five Dynasties, but it was only a summary and record. According to the third volume of "Three Religions' Origins Seeking Gods", before Emperor Taizong, the local people had built a temple for Yu Zhao in Guanjiangkou, commonly known as Guankou Jiro. When I was in the north, Yizhou was in chaos, so Zhang Guai Duck was ordered to rule Shu. Yico Zeng went to the temple to pray for God. Afterwards, he asked the emperor to honor the holy name and said, "Clear the source, wonderful, true gentleman." Since then, the reputation of this "Erlang God" has increased day by day. The Erlang God in the novels and operas of the Song and Yuan Dynasties and the folklore of the Han nationality is basically the image and "miracle" of this Zhao Erlang, and it has had an important influence on the shaping of the image of Erlang God in the later novels of gods and demons such as The Journey to the West and The Romance of Ghosts. Yu Zhao should be Yu Yang. "Henan Fuzhi" contains that "there is Erlang Temple in the south gate of Fucheng, Henan Province, which worships Sui and Guan Zhou and seeks to build a dike to relieve floods, so the people set up a temple."
