Charles Dickens
The British novelist was born into a family of naval officers. When he was 10 years old, his family was forced to move into a debtor's prison, and when he was 11 years old, he took on heavy housework. He worked as an apprentice in a shoemaking workshop, worked as a copywriter in a law firm at the age of 16, and later as an interviewer in a newspaper. He only went to school for a few years and became a famous writer through hard work and self-study.
He lived in Britain, which was transitioning from semi-feudal society to industrial capitalist society. His works extensively and profoundly described all aspects of social life during this period, vividly and vividly portrayed representatives of various classes, and exposed and criticized various ugly social phenomena and their representatives from a humanitarian perspective. Sympathize with and support the sufferings of working people and their resistance struggles. But at the same time, he also advocates the ideas of tolerance and forgiveness, as well as class reconciliation with "love" as the core. Dickens wrote 14 novels, many short stories, essays, travel notes, plays, and sketches. The most famous among them are the long masterpiece "Hard Times" (1854), which describes the contradiction between labor and capital, and "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859), another masterpiece that describes the French Revolution in 1789. The former shows the brutal exploitation and oppression of workers by industrial capitalists, describes the unity struggle of the working class, and criticizes the principles of free competition and utilitarian doctrine that justify capitalist exploitation. The latter alluded to the social reality in Britain at the time, the brutality of the French aristocracy, the suffering of the people and the historical power of the French Revolution, and predicted that the "terrible fire" would also happen again in France. Other works include "Oliver Test" (also translated as "Oliver Twist", 1838), "The Old Curiosity Shop" (1841), "Northeastern Fathers and Sons" (1848), "David Copperfield" (1850) and The Great Crusade (1861), among others.
Dickens is an outstanding representative of British realist literature in the 19th century. In art, he is known for his witty humor, meticulous psychological analysis, and the organic combination of realistic description and romantic atmosphere. Marx called him and Thackeray "a group of outstanding novelists" in Britain.
