On the night when Dr. King was shot, a rifle was found one block away from the Lorraine motel where the assassination took place. In the following weeks, as the investigation continued, all the evidence-rifles, fingerprints and eyewitness accounts-pointed to a suspect: the petty criminal James earl ray.
1967 Lei, who escaped from Missouri prison, was serving his sentence for robbery at that time and became the target of a large-scale manhunt in May 1968. He bought a Canadian passport under a false name and was arrested at London airport on June 8th. 1968. Ray admitted that he tried to go to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe),
According to his lawyer, Percy Foreman, a well-known criminal defense lawyer, James Early confessed to the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King in order to avoid being sent to the electric chair. Mr foreman insisted that ray sign every page of his letter advising his client to plead guilty. Part of the letter reads: "In my opinion, if your case goes to trial, you have a 99% chance of being sentenced to death."
A few days later, Ray claimed to meet a man named Raoul at 1967, and he dragged him into an armed operation. When MLK was murdered, Ray said he realized that he was framed and put the blame on Canada. The judge didn't buy it, so his motion to change his plea was rejected. Over the years, he has repeatedly asked for a retrial.
Coretta scott king, the widow of MLK, and their children gradually believe that there may be something in his story, or at least he may be innocent. In the last few years of his life, Martin Luther King was constantly eavesdropped and intimidated by Edgar Hoover's FBI. His outspoken anti-war stance and his call for ensuring the income of all Americans were hardly welcomed by the top American leaders in the post-Kennedy era. For example, this is a memo circulated in the FBI office after the "Dream" speech:
In view of the powerful inflammatory speech made by the king yesterday, he surpassed all other black leaders in the issue of affecting a large number of black people. If we hadn't done this before, we must regard him as the most dangerous black man in this country in the future, from the perspective of * * *, black people and national security.
The FBI later found out that Kim Jong-un was said to have many affairs, and sent him all kinds of anonymous letters, claiming that "you are a big liar and an evil person" and threatening to blackmail him. In another anonymous letter allegedly from the FBI, they said,
The American public, the church organizations that have been helping Protestants, Catholics and Jews, will know you because you are an evil beast. So are other people who support you. You're finished. King, you only have one thing left. You know what that is. You only have 34 days to do it (this exact number has certain practical significance for designation). You're finished. You only have one way out. You'd better accept the dirty deception before it is exposed to the country.
(Many FBI surveillance records, text and audio records about the king are currently kept in the National Archives, but they will be kept secret until 2027. )
Needless to say, many conspiracy theorists believe that this does not extend to the idea that the FBI was involved in the king's murder.
In other words, in the years after the assassination, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Special Assassination Committee of the House of Representatives and the District Attorney's Office in Shelby County, Tennessee have repeatedly re-examined this crime. Everyone came to the same conclusion: James Earley shot and killed Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968 at/kloc-0.
The House Committee admitted that there may be a conspiracy, including the participation of one or more criminals other than Lei. Although there is no conclusive evidence to prove this theory, according to Lei's family and friends,
Besides rifles, fingerprints and other physical evidence, he also has a convincing criminal motive: blatant racism. People close to him also insist that he often talks about his plans to assassinate famous civil rights leaders.
Finally, James earl ray was sentenced to 99 years' imprisonment and died in 1998.
