Eyes of Judgment's girlfriend system simply provides additional subplots and does nothing else. Compared to the past, where Kiryu has been a thousand times more likely to bring an escort out to play along with the scene, this time around, the girlfriends are finally a more three-dimensional portrayal of the character's personality. While there are still some crossovers left in the story, overall the trial has been a lot more restrained than the last few Kisaragi.

After the death of his parents, Yagami became an orphan and spent his teenage years in Kamurocho in a state of self-loathing, but with the support of many people, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a lawyer.
Then, Yagami takes on the role of defense attorney in a murder case. Like his father back then, Yagami campaigned to prove the innocence of the suspect, Shinpei Okubo, and eventually succeeded in winning a not guilty verdict. The acquittal was a miracle in the 99.9% guilty Japanese criminal courts, and Yagami became a popular lawyer.
But Shinpei Okubo, who was acquitted, brutally murdered his live-in girlfriend after his release. Not only did he stab his partner dozens of times with a kitchen knife, but he also set fire to the apartment where they lived.
