Appraised by the police, 3,474 of them are obscene CDs, all of which were purchased by Yuan and Mo from Yiwu, Zhejiang, and have not yet been sold. Yuan and Mo were immediately detained on suspicion of selling obscene articles for profit, and were formally arrested 1 month later. In court, the lawyer pleaded guilty to Yuan, arguing that Yuan's selling obscene CDs was an attempt and should be mitigated. In May of the same year, the Gongshu District Court made a formal judgment on the case: Yuan and his girlfriend Mo were both sentenced to 6 years in prison. In two detention centers, Yuan participated in the conviction of at least two unjust cases, which almost killed three people.

After the Spring Festival in 2003, he was detained in Hebi City Detention Center, Henan Province, thousands of miles away, in the same prison as Ma Tingxin, a suspect in a murder case in Xun County under the jurisdiction of Hebi City at that time. According to Ma's statement after he was acquitted, he agreed to "surrender" only after being tortured and following Yuan's "temptation". The surrender materials were also written by Yuan. Ma Tingxin confessed: "I said I didn't kill that man. I don't know how to write. He (Yuan) will write to me. " Every time Ma Tingxin comes back from the arraignment, he knows everything he says.

In April 2004, Yuan appeared in Gongshu District Detention Center in Hangzhou, with the same name as Zhang Hui. At that time, Zhang Gaoping and Zhang Hui's uncle were suspects in a rape and murder case, and the police did not have any traces of physical evidence. On the contrary, according to the identification, the stranger's DNA under the female victim's fingernails does not belong to these two uncles. As soon as he entered the cell, Yuan repeatedly asked Zhang Hui if he did it. Zhang denied it and was beaten by Yuan. The 26 pieces of evidence in the guilty verdict of the first instance in this case are almost circumstantial evidence before and after the crime. Only Yuan testified that Zhang Hui claimed to have raped and killed a woman in the detention center.

Fortunately, after serving nearly 10 years, Uncle Zhang was acquitted by Zhejiang High Court on March 26th, 20th13. Yuan's sentence was reduced for "sending' off-site' for many times to assist the public security organs' work'", with the first reduction of 1.5 years and the second reduction of 10 months. He was released from prison as early as September 2004.
