Lawyer service is not a' luxury' for a few rich people, but a' necessity' that ordinary people can enjoy. Malan has always believed in this. During the Spring Festival, Malan took advantage of her rare holiday to receive an exclusive interview with Fiona Fang Law magazine. For this firm belief, she left her footprints in the plateau, in the frontier and in the poor mountain villages.
By chance, the door of legal aid was opened.
One day in April 21, Malan saw a news about recruiting a lawyer for legal aid on the Internet. When she learned that there were no lawyers in more than 2 counties in China, she felt a little shocked and felt that she could do something. " The dream of voluntary service buried in my heart for a long time has been awakened. " Ma Lan said with a smile.
On July 21st, 21, Malan and other legal aid lawyers from different provinces in China set foot on the train to Gansu and resolutely joined the "1+1" China legal aid volunteer activity jointly organized by the Ministry of Justice and the Communist Youth League Central Committee. This time, she bid farewell to her family, packed her bags, and embarked on the first volunteer journey in her life. The service period was one year, and her destination was Shandan County, Gansu Province, which belonged to the traditional desert area. She is the only woman among 12 people. Her decision stems from her simple desire to do some public welfare or volunteer several times. She believes that "the idea of great kindness is not as good as the act of small kindness, and it is moved 1, times".
Malan's arrival has filled the gap that there are no legal aid lawyers here. In the eyes of local people, Malan is the "savior" to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests. This respect made Malan somewhat uncomfortable, but she also deeply felt the huge demand and strong desire of local people for legal services, especially legal aid. Shortly after arriving in Shandan, Gansu, she took over a case of intentional injury to a minor. Six minors under the age of 18 killed a junior high school student under the age of 14 and burned his body. Ma Lan defended one of the 14-year-old defendants named Xiaoqiang. " I feel like riding a roller coaster when I look through the file materials. " She didn't expect the six young defendants to be so cruel. Seeing the victim's blackened body open helplessly and helpless, Ma Lan's heart ached.
When I first went to the detention center to meet Xiaoqiang, Malan found Xiaoqiang had big eyes and a round face, and he could not be associated with the words "intentional injury" and "violent crime". Xiaoqiang's words made Malan even more difficult to let go. " Aunt Ma, I know that you are a volunteer lawyer in Beijing. When you go back, can you ask my parents to pay a lot of money for you to defend me? "Malan's heart was stabbed by something, and it hurt instantly. In order not to let Xiao Qiang see the tears oozing from her eyes, she hurried out of the door and pretended to look up at the sky. At that moment, Malan realized what a lawyer means to the defendant in the west where lawyer resources are scarce. At that moment, Malan was sincerely gratified and proud of his decision to volunteer to be a lawyer in the west.
Malan's office and living conditions are very simple. The Shandan County Legal Aid Center where she works has only one computer, which belongs to everyone. Due to the shortage of office funds, there is not even a file bag for filing materials. It was difficult for Shandan County Judicial Bureau to provide her with a decent residence. After many twists and turns, she was arranged in the single dormitory of the local procuratorate. This is an abandoned office building. At ordinary times, Malan is the only one in the whole building. The room where Malan lives is sealed with glass outside, and it is airtight inside. Even if he goes in during the day, it is dark. There is only a bed and a table in the room. The winter in Shandan is extremely cold, the north wind is bitter, and the water flowing out of the water pipe is freezing. On weekends, the county often cuts off power and water, so she has to buy mineral water to quench her thirst. There is no place to eat at the weekend, so we have to rely on biscuits and Lamian Noodles to pass the time.
For Malan, the external difficulties are nothing. This year in Shandan is like drinking a pot of old wine, with a long taste.
Happiness is on the road to legal aid
One year's volunteer service in Shandan, Gansu Province is coming to an end, and Malan did not hesitate to sign up for Tibet. The reason is simple: "Gansu is so short of lawyers, and Tibet is definitely even more short."
In July 211, Malan came to the Legal Aid Center in Chengguan District, Lhasa, Tibet. In this Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an average altitude of more than 4, meters, it is not only the cold and oxygen-deficient climate that tests her, but also the embarrassment of having no legal aid center service. Malan didn't lose heart, looking for an office, taking a post and working, everything started in an orderly way and began to get on the right track.
Malan always regards Tibetan compatriots who come to ask for help as relatives. Seeing that they are reluctant to eat out, Malan always takes out his meals and dry food for everyone to eat. Some old people, time and time again, came to repeat this to Ma Lan. Although Malan has listened to them many times, every time she listens to them, she is as patient as the first time. She knows that these old people are not only worried that she didn't hear clearly, but also sincerely regard Malan as their "savior".
Halfway through the one-year volunteer period for aiding Tibet, Meng Xiangbin, director of the Justice Bureau of Chengguan District of Lhasa, came to Malan's office and asked her to stay. " It was not easy to set up the legal aid center. I can't bear to see the legal aid center close again after you left. " The sincere words of the director suddenly reminded Malan of how many times the masses sought legal aid. Everything seemed to leave Malan with no choice but to stay for another year.
Ma Lan wrote in his diary: "I have worked in Tibet for two years. If it weren't for the leadership of China Legal Aid Foundation, considering my physical condition, I would be reluctant to leave. Tibet is a magical place. Two years of volunteer experience has made me deeply attached to Tibet. I often wonder why Tibetans are so pious. Because the nature there is amazing, compared with it, human beings are too small. "
Two years' volunteer experience in Tibet has given Malan a deeper understanding of happiness. " Material life can be dull, but spiritual life must be enriched.
Malan continues to run on the road of legal aid: in July 213, Ximeng, Yunnan; In July 214, southwest Guizhou.
Yue Xuanyi, chairman of China Legal Aid Foundation, said that Malan has gone from Shandandan to Gesanghua, from Gesanghua to Camellia, and now from Camellia to Rhododendron. Yue Xuanyi also improvised a poem for Malan: the dream of fairness and justice came true, leaving home and going to the frontier. Bricks and tiles are built by the people, and three flowers bloom to see Malan.
"Malanhua, Malanhua, are not afraid of wind and rain, industrious people are talking, please bloom now ..." Whenever I recite the folk songs in the movie "Malanhua", the beautiful and magical Malanhua can't help coming to my eyes. It is such a flower that can help kind, hardworking and brave people realize their wishes and bring happiness to everyone.
Speaking of the volunteer work of legal aid in the front line for five years, she said that she finally understood the true meaning of the word "helping others".
Enlightenment beyond legal aid
Malan in "Flowers Bloom in Shandandan" vividly interprets that "a good man can always be satisfied and comforted by himself in a very difficult environment". Malan regards himself as a gyroscope, constantly urging it to keep spinning, standing and working hard.
In the five-year legal aid work, it is inevitable that there will be lonely times, and Ma Lan often keeps a diary and talks to himself. During more than two years in Gansu and Tibet, she wrote more than 87 diaries, recording the cases she handled and her mental journey. Ma Lan said, "I have never had so many conversations with myself as I do now. This is the most precious wealth in my life. What are those lost incomes? In Malan's view, legal aid is not only as simple as handling cases and popularizing laws, but also to shape and change people in the process of legal aid.
After several years of legal aid work experience, Malan knows that it is always not safe and comprehensive to help the recipients defend their rights after an accident. To this end, as soon as Malan arrived in southwestern Guizhou, he took the initiative to contact the school to give students legal courses. He also went to the large-scale radio program "Golden State Legal Time and Space" jointly founded by the Propaganda Department of the State Party Committee and the State Judicial Bureau for a number of times to be a guest program and publicize the legal system. By the end of 214, Malan had been a guest program for ten times. Once Malan took a taxi, and the driver said "I know you" without saying a few words. Ma Lan felt very strange, only after asking did he know that the driver had heard Ma Lan's guest program "Golden State Rule of Law Time and Space". The driver's sentence, "The case you told is impressive and unforgettable", not only makes Malan happy, but also feels the responsibility and pressure.
Malan is also very strict with herself. Besides improving her professional skills in legal services, she also requires herself to study more in psychological counseling. "Because I often face vulnerable groups, such as a young man in his twenties, who was paralyzed in bed by an accident and his girlfriend left him, and even thought of suicide, what I can do is more psychological counseling besides legal aid. "
" Lawyer Ma, you are becoming more and more like a people's lawyer ". This is a joke made by a friend of China Legal Aid Foundation when he met Malan before the interview. Malan responded with a smile: "Are you saying that I have become vulgar? "In dress, Malan is getting more and more grounded, because she understands that simple dress really makes people feel psychologically distant." Details are important " She added.
"The gain and loss of life is not only a simple arithmetic of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on a calculator, but also has rich and lofty spiritual connotation. I am an ordinary lawyer. I can't do anything earth-shattering in my life, but I feel very fulfilled that I can go deep into the grassroots and the masses and do something for the people in the poverty-stricken areas in the west in my lifetime. "Ma Lan wrote in his diary. Talking about the future, Ma Lan said that if possible, she hopes to stay at the forefront of legal aid.
if someone asks, "why are you so happy to be rooted in this job? "I believe that because I have been working and running around that land for many years, Ma Lan can also answer without hypocrisy:" Because I love this land too much. "In any case, a person's professional skills and enthusiastic service are needed, recognized and appreciated, which is a high level of life needs and self-realization. From the first time I came into contact with the eager eyes and simple living conditions of the villagers, Malan felt that he had not come in vain. "Wherever I go, I should send my light."
"In a noisy big city, these experiences are always hard to experience and possess. Only then did I realize that my understanding of life seems to have just begun. " These unforgettable experiences are replayed in Malan's mind like a film, and she reconsiders the value and significance of being a lawyer.
