Maonan District is the political, economic and cultural center of Maoming City, with an area of 9,675 hectares of woodland, a forest coverage rate of 16.3% and a standing stock of 444,300 cubic meters. Important mineral resources include oil shale, kaolin, quartz sand and geothermal mineral springs. With an exploitable output of 4.462 billion tons, oil shale is the southern oil refining base and the largest tilapia seed production base in Guangdong Province.

There are floods (during the flood season from May to September, the average rainfall is 1300mm, accounting for 8 1% of the annual rainfall), cold dew winds, typhoons and droughts.
