Idioms of Seven Sages in Bamboo Forest

Become a giant among dwarfs

Ji Kang is 7 feet 8 inches long and charming. His son Ji Shao is tall, smart and handsome, and stands out among his peers. Ji Shao served as an assistant during the reign of Emperor Jinhui, which was the period of "Eight Kings Rebellion". When the imperial court marched northward, Ji Shao took the imperial edict to drive away his residence, because the emperor was in exile. This day happened to be the day when the imperial army was defeated in the shadow. Hui Di was injured and the officials and all the guards fled. Only Ji Shao was crowned and supported to stand up for Hui Di. After Ji Shao was killed by the rebels, blood spilled on Hui Di's clothes, and Hui Di mourned his death. When the war was over, the attendants wanted to wash the royal clothes. Hui Di said, "This is the waiter's blood. Don't wash it off. "Ji Shao's loyalty was affirmed by later emperors, and Du Fu, Wen Tianxiang and others also praised Ji Shao's loyalty in their poems. When Ji Shao first arrived in Luoyang, someone said to Wang Rong, "I saw Ji Shao in a dense crowd yesterday, and I was as proud as a wild crane in a flock of chickens." "Stand out from the crowd" means that a person's appearance or talent stands out from the crowd around him.

Inability, luck, fame

From "Biography of Ruan Ji in the Book of Jin", (Ruan Ji) tasted martial arts, watched the battle between Chu and Han, and sighed:' There was no hero at that time, and Li Zi became famous.' "Ruan Ji is lofty and conceited, bohemian, overlooking the ancient battlefield. He regrets that there were no real heroes at the end of the Qin Dynasty, so people like Liu Bang actually became famous. There are many controversies about this in later generations. Su Dongpo believes that "if you are injured, there will be no Liu and no item." The upright refers to the ears in Wei and Jin Dynasties. "Time has passed, and one thousand years have passed. Whether Ruan Ji's words refer to "no heroes" during the Chu-Han dispute or "outstanding fame" in the author's era is impossible to verify. I'm afraid only Ruan Ji knows. Nowadays, we use "falling in name" to describe mediocrity, or lament that we are born at an untimely time and have no talent.

Topic phoenix is in the door

Ji Kang and Lu An are best friends. "Every lovesickness is thousands of miles away." On one occasion, Lu An failed to meet Ji Kang, and Ji Kang's brother Ji Xi came out to receive him respectfully. Lv An didn't come in, but left after writing the word "Feng" on the gate. Ji Xi doesn't quite understand. He thinks that Phoenix is the king of birds, which means good luck. He thought Lu An was praising himself and was very happy. Ji Kang came back to see this word and said, "The word' phoenix' is a bird." Lu Anyuan pointed out that Ji was a "vulgar" person compared with his brother Ji Kang, and satirized Ji as just a mediocre ordinary bird. The title of Phoenix is ostensibly a compliment at the door, but secretly a mockery. By the way, Ji is known as a "contemporary genius". Jin Dynasty successively served as Jiangxia satrap, Xuzhou secretariat, Yangzhou secretariat, Taifu and Zong Zheng, and they were also a generation of figures, but they paid too much attention to officialdom and not desire.

Fine traditions are cut off or succeeded.

Ji Kang, a word uncle, is seven feet eight inches long and has outstanding charm. He is proficient in literature, metaphysics and music. When Ji Kang was traveling in Luoyang, he played the piano in Huayang Pavilion one night. Suddenly a distinguished scholar came to visit, and they talked about temperament and were very speculative. The guest borrowed Ji Kang's piano and played a song, which was rich and solid and had a wonderful tone. It's for Guangling San. Ji Kang asked the guest for the score. The guest said that the score was not difficult to pass on, but asked Ji Kang not to pass on the score to others. Ji Kang agreed. After that, Gao Shi drifted away. Ji Kang is a loose stone, but he is not a group. He despises powerful people, which hypocrites can't tolerate. Ji Kang befriended two brothers, Lu Xun (long character) and Lu An (long character). Later, because Lu Xun occupied his sister-in-law, the Xu family and the Lu brothers, they were at daggers drawn. Lu Xun falsely accused Lu An of being a mother, and Ji Kang angrily wrote "Break up with Lu Chang" as a friend's defense. The powerful hypocrites headed by Si Mazhao used this as an excuse to jointly persecute Ji Kang and Lu An. Ji Kang was arrested and the whole city was in uproar. Three thousand Taitai students in Luoyang pleaded for Ji Kang, and they were willing to take Ji Kang as their teacher to save Ji Kang, which was rejected by the court. Before Ji Kang was executed, he was left alone in Dan Tao, and his attitude remained unchanged. After singing the song, he felt that Guangling San was about to be wiped out by the whole army. The scene was tragic and shocked the whole country. "Extinction of Guangling" often means that fine traditions are cut off or there is no successor.

Simple beauty

Dan Tao, known as Juyuan, is the oldest among the "Seven Sages of Bamboo Forest". He lived in poverty alone in his early years and had little endurance. Most of the "Seven Sages of Bamboo Forest" are ashamed of being an official, but Dan Tao is broad-minded and far-reaching, and follows the principle of "gentlemen are harmonious but different". During the Cao Wei period, Dan Tao witnessed the cruel struggle within the regime and refused to be an official; After Si Mazhao came to power, Dan Tao didn't become an official until he was confused. Although he is in the officialdom, his personality is independent and his thoughts are free, which is admirable. When Dan Tao was transferred from Cao Lang to the corps commander, he wanted to recommend Ji Kang to take his original position. Ji Kang refused Dan Tao's recommendation and wrote "Breaking Up with Mountain Residence". Dan Tao knew Ji Kang was a man and didn't mind. Ji Kang was framed in prison and became an orphan in Dan Tao before his execution. Dan Tao resolutely accepted and raised a pair of children of Ji Kang, and later recommended Ji Kang's son Ji Shao as an official. It is not easy for Dan Tao to be an official in troubled times. It is not easy to stick to his independent personality and stick to the bottom line. Wang Rongzan said: "The mountain is as rich as jade and gold, and people respect its treasure, not its name." "Rough jade" is uncut jade, and "muddy gold" is unmelted gold. People often pursue the gorgeous appearance of stone, but they can't see the inherent nobility of jadeite original stone and muddy gold. "Pure jade and pure gold" is a metaphor for the beauty of nature and describes people's simplicity and purity.

Mountain announcement

During the period of Cao Wei, Dan Tao was appointed as the official minister of Cao Lang. After the establishment of the Western Jin regime, Sima Yan, Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty, appointed him as the minister of rites. Dan Tao has been selecting talents for this position for more than ten years. Whenever there is a vacancy, Dan Tao starts to put some candidates on the stage. After receiving instructions from Emperor Wu of Jin, he will arrange talents favored by Emperor Wu of Jin. So in the view of ministers, many new officials were not recommended by ministers, and everyone didn't know the real intention of Emperor Wu, so they all thought it was arranged by Dan Tao. As a result, some ministers spoke ill of Dan Tao in front of the emperor. Emperor Wu of Jin did not know the truth, so he wrote a letter of appointment to Dan Tao: "The husband uses talents, does not alienate himself, and the world transforms it." However, Dan Tao did not explain this, and it remained the same as before. A year later, the discussion was over. Dan Tao commented on all the people he recommended, and wrote the origin, resume, classification and assessment of talents as "notices" for the emperor's reference, which was called "mountain notices" at that time to show that Dan Tao would be an official and do things seriously.
