In criminal proceedings, why can't the defendant entrust a lawyer to represent him?

In a criminal case, if the victim participates in a lawsuit, the defendant may entrust a lawyer as an intermediate defender and a defender as an agent in an incidental civil lawsuit. These defenders can appear in court as defenders in the court investigation or debate of criminal cases, or as civil agents in criminal incidental civil proceedings.
