Buddhism and Taoism have been in Shandong for more than 1000 years, and Islam developed mainly after Hui Muslims moved to Shandong in13rd century. Catholicism and Christianity spread rapidly mainly after the Opium War.

3. Diet

Shandong cuisine is an important part of China's food culture and one of the eight major cuisines in China. It is famous at home and abroad for its freshness, saltiness, crispness, tenderness, unique flavor and fine production. There are great regional differences in the province, thus forming three systems: coastal Jiaodong cuisine, inland jinan cuisine, and self-contained Confucian cuisine.

Extended data

The influence of cultural Confucianism in Shandong: Confucianism, as the core of Qilu culture, originated in Shandong in the Spring and Autumn Period and was first advocated by Confucius. Mencius and Xunzi carry forward the past and the future. After Qin Shihuang unified the world, it objectively created an opportunity for Confucianism to go further out of Shandong.

However, the Confucian thought of restoring ancient ways and advocating benevolence and righteousness was not valued by Qin Shihuang, who advocated the rule of law and autocracy. Instead, it created a literary and historical disaster of "burning books and burying Confucianism". It was not until the Western Han Dynasty that Qilu Confucian scholars were able to display their talents and ambitions. When Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was in power, he adopted the advice of Dong Zhongshu, a Confucian scholar, to "oust a hundred schools of thought and respect Confucianism alone", and finally established the orthodox position of Confucianism.

Confucianism has a broad and profound social foundation in Shandong, which has influenced the character of Shandong people from generation to generation. For example, Shandong people are simple and kind, treat people kindly, work hard, take the overall situation into account and pay attention to practical work. But on the other hand, the character of Shandong people also contains the characteristics of self-restraint, conformity and paranoia.
