High altitude pipeline maintenance

Remove oil, condensate, wax, mechanical impurities, iron sulfide and other corrosion products and water accumulated in the trachea to restore or improve pipeline transportation efficiency. These substances are attached to the pipe wall or deposited under the pipe, which reduces the cross-sectional area of the pipe, corrodes the inner surface of the pipe and increases the energy consumption of oil and gas transportation.

Pigging mainly uses pig. Some pigs are equipped with various instruments to measure pipe wall thickness, internal corrosion, pipe deformation and position settlement. Commonly used pigs are spherical pig, cup pig and soft pig.

Also known as pigging ball, it is mostly used to remove accumulated water in pipelines and condensate in gas transmission pipelines, and to clean pipelines after construction and before production, as isolation in the sequential transportation of oil products. Generally, the outside diameter of the pig ball is 2% larger than the inside diameter of the pipeline, which is called interference.

Before putting the pig ball into the pipeline, it must be filled with water to expand it, so that the pig ball can form an annular contact surface with the pipe wall when running in the pipeline, and achieve better sealing and pigging effects.

The operation of the pig in the pipeline depends on the pressure difference formed before and after it, and the operating pressure difference is generally 0.3 ~ 0.5 kgf/cm. The pressure difference required for pig ball operation is smaller than that of other types of pigs. After long-distance operation, the diameter of pigging ball will become smaller, and the sealing performance and pigging effect will decrease. The method of supplementing water and pressurizing can be used to restore the diameter of the ball.

A pigging ball made of wear-resistant plastic with a wall thickness of 50 mm can run about 2000 kilometers. The pig ball has strong adaptability and can pass through the bend with small curvature radius; And can be in place when being sent and received by the gravity of the ball. The disadvantage of pigging ball is that the effect of removing wax, rust and other solid substances in the pipe is poor, the cost is high, and it is difficult to install testing instruments on the ball.
