Introduction to the square tower of Dayun Temple in Linfen?

The square tower of Dayun Temple is located in Dayun Temple, Yaodu District, Linfen City. It is the main building of Dayun Temple, the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Dayun Temple, also known as Tiefo Temple, was founded in the Zhenguan period of Tang Dynasty (627-649), destroyed by earthquake in the 34th year of Qing Emperor Kangxi, and rebuilt in the 54th year (17 15). The square tower is one of the existing buildings in the Tang Dynasty and the essence of Tiefo Temple. The tower * * * has six floors, the first to fifth floors are square, and the sixth floor is octagonal, arranged in an octagonal direction. This tower is more than 30 meters high. The whole square tower is luxuriously decorated, and each floor is inlaid with glass pieces into a heart-shaped pattern, which contains stories of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Lohan and Buddhism. There is a brick carved pot door on the lower part of the first floor, engraved with dragon, jade rabbit, unicorn, fairy deer, flowers and other patterns. Except for the second floor, the tower has no flat support. There is a low glass base on the eaves of the five-story tower, which supports the sixth octagonal tower. The waist on the sixth floor is a gossip pattern made of glazed tiles, which is very different from the rest. The top of the tower is octagonal, covered with green glass, and the slope is extremely steep, which is a typical clear method.

The square tower of Dayun Temple is hollow on the first floor, with doors for people to pass through. There is an iron Buddha head six meters high and five meters in diameter in the room. This was cast in the Tang Dynasty. According to legend, when Sakyamuni was giving a lecture in Kaifeng, he suddenly fell asleep and leaned forward, flashing his head in Pingyang (now Linfen), but his body stayed in Kaifeng, so Dayun Temple only left the head of a giant Buddha, and so on. The square tower of Dayun Temple is different from ordinary Tang tower buildings, and its two floors or more have shrunk dramatically, and they are all solid.

Dayun Temple and Dayun Temple Pagoda were announced as key cultural relics protection units in Shanxi Province in 1992, and were listed as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2006.
