Origin of Place Names in Dawang Town, Yangxin County, Hubei Province

Dawang Town, about 30 kilometers southeast of Huangshi, is a key township in Yangxin County. This town was named after Sun Quan, the prince of Wu, who came here for disaster relief during the Three Kingdoms period. In memory of the King of Wu, people here call the mountains and temples "Wang". For thousands of years, the town has a resounding name-Dawang Town. 74-year-old Wu Wang Li Jiufa has lived in this town all his life. When he was very young, he listened to the stories of the Three Kingdoms told by his ancestors. Sun Quan, the prince of Wu, came here for disaster relief, leaving many legends. According to the old man, it was a part of the Yangtze River, and the river reached Bijia Mountain in the town, so there were frequent floods. After the flood, the people were miserable and desolate. During the Three Kingdoms period, it belonged to Wu Dong. At that time, Sun Quan's brother Sun Ce often came here to provide relief and food for the people. After Sun Ce's death, Sun Quan succeeded to the throne and proclaimed himself emperor. He not only led his officers and men to this place for disaster relief, but also sent his son Sun Deng to this place for disaster relief.

On one occasion, during this disaster relief, Sun Deng suddenly got dysentery, and it was useless to take many medicines. The people were very anxious and sent the local spring water to Sun Deng's residence. Sun Deng drank it and asked what kind of water it was. The local people told him that there is a spring in Chongcun, which is not dry all year round and the water quality is sweet. People often use this spring to treat diseases. When Sun Deng came this spring, it was really amazing. Spring water gushed from a flat land, which was bottomless. After the officers and men drank the spring water, all the dysentery recovered. Sun Deng was very moved and led the officers and men to continue the disaster relief. In order to thank Sun Deng, people later called this spring Wu Wangquan. Now the spring water of Wuwangquan is developed into mineral water by local people. According to the villagers, for thousands of years, the springs here have never dried up in dry season or rainy season, and the water level has never changed. The villagers tried to explore the depth with ropes, but there was no result.

According to Peng, an old man who specializes in geographical names in our city, Dawang Town is named after Dawang Hall. When Sun Quan, the king of Wu, gave relief to the people here, the people built a temple in Jiangxiangshan, southwest of the town, and named it "Dawang Temple" and "Dawang Mountain" to commemorate his fundraising. The temple is dedicated to the statue of Sun Quan, the king of Wu. On the hill in front of the king's temple, there is also a hexagonal pavilion overlooking the town. This pavilion is called Tian Jieting. Like the Temple of the King, it was built to commemorate the King of Wu. Dawang Town has 23 administrative villages with a population of less than 50,000 and a water surface of 28,000 mu. This is a veritable land of plenty. On the old street in the center of the town, there is a trickle passing through the town. This is an endless stream from Wu Wangquan.

Walking in the narrow old street, there are many shops on both sides, and the residents live a leisurely life. Although the original bluestone road in the old street has been replaced by cement road, you can still appreciate the quaint atmosphere of the ancient town. Every time the water is used, the residents come out of their homes. The busy figure of the residents by the stream, especially the sound of mallets, brings people back to ancient times. Ancient dwellings reflect history. Take the 106 national road to the north for 2 kilometers and enter Dajipu Town, Daye, and soon arrive at Dawang Town. Looking up along the way, ancient houses come into view. Those old black-and-white buildings are ancient dwellings with a history of hundreds of years.

According to Ke Armed Police, the deputy mayor of the town, before the Cultural Revolution, there were many unique ancient houses in Dawang Town, which were built by some sculptures and were very beautiful. During the Cultural Revolution, many precious cultural relics were destroyed, leaving many empty old houses. After entering the 1990s, many wealthy farmers rebuilt or rebuilt their old houses, which made some distinctive houses gradually disappear. Now many villagers regret it when they think about it. It was the "golden nest" that was demolished that year. At present, only a few villages such as Liqing Village are well-preserved ancient dwellings.

In Shengmingzhuang, Baxiang Village, the reporter saw in the home of villager Cao that his old house has been well preserved so far. Walking into the old house, the quaint breath came to my face. The house is a brick-wood structure, which belongs to a typical Jiangnan style building. A patio is connected with the outside world. Most of the bricks in the house are carved columns and painted buildings. Carved flowers and birds and characters in folk stories are lifelike. According to Cao, his old house was built in the Qing Dynasty and has a history of several hundred years. During the Cultural Revolution, his family secretly removed some valuable screens and painted beams and hid them deep, which has been preserved to this day. In recent years, many people have visited his home, and some people are willing to pay 654.38 million yuan to paint the building and screen, which have been declined.
