At the end of his life, he also told his children to study Dunhuang well. "The patron saint of Dunhuang"-these five words are engraved on Mr. Chang Shuhong's tombstone.

Duan Wenjie is the second dean of the college. Sichuanese almost came to Dunhuang with Chang Shuhong. Starting from 1946, Duan Wenjie copied more than 340 murals of different periods in various grottoes, setting a number of firsts in the history of personal copying of Mogao Grottoes. His copy of Courtesy of the Lady of the Governor's Office is a model of reproduction and can be called a masterpiece handed down from generation to generation. But now, he is gone.

1984, with the approval of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government, Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute was expanded to Dunhuang Research Institute, with Duan Wenjie as its president, Chang Shuhong as its honorary president and Wu Jian as its chief consultant.

From April 65438 to April 0998, Fan Jinshi was the president, Meng was the deputy secretary of the Party Committee, honorary president and chief consultant, and Ma, Li Zui were the vice presidents.

There are Party Committee Office, Administrative Office, Security Office, Protection Research Institute, Fine Arts Research Institute, Archaeological Research Institute, Literature Research Institute, Dunhuang Grottoes Cultural Relics Protection Research and Exhibition Center, Dunhuang Information Center, Editorial Department, Photography and Video Department, Reception Department and Academic Committee. There are 248 employees in the hospital, including 8 research librarians, 6 associate research librarians/kloc-0, and 5 librarians/kloc-0.

During this period, the implementation of holistic, comprehensive and scientific protection increased the research on Dunhuang documents and broadened the research field of Dunhuang grottoes. It not only continues to study the content and art of Buddhism, but also studies various social, cultural and artistic themes in the grotto era, history and murals. In addition, a museum (exhibition center) has been established; Dunhuang Grottoes began to open to the outside world and conducted extensive academic exchanges with domestic and foreign countries; Establishing the academic journal Dunhuang Studies; A large number of research results have been published. Dunhuang Research Institute is a comprehensive research institution for the protection and research of various undertakings.

Due to its outstanding contribution to the reform and development of cultural heritage protection, Dunhuang Research Institute was awarded the honorary title of National Advanced Collective of Cultural Relics System by the Ministry of Personnel and National Cultural Heritage Administration on May 24th, 2007.
