(Statue of Ding Baozhen)
First, the popular eunuch has done too many bad things and has a very bad reputation. He was killed when he left the palace, which won a good applause. Secondly, because An Dehai won the favor of Empress Dowager Cixi, she was a red man around Empress Dowager Cixi. As a local official, Ding Baozhen, the governor of Shandong Province, dared to touch the ground on the Empress Dowager, and people worried about him.
In fact, as can be seen from historical records, Ding Baozhen was not a rash person, nor was he a eunuch who left the palace without asking indiscriminately. If you dare to kill An Dehai, he will get shot. After the news of Ding Baozhen's capture in Tai 'an came out, he gave a secret performance to Empress Dowager Ci 'an, who was in charge of the imperial court, and got the instruction of "enforcing the law on the spot" before moving the knife.
Cixi, who is familiar with the rules of the Qing court officialdom, certainly knows that Ding Baozhen, the governor of Shandong Province, doesn't have the guts. She knew that An Dehai had made public anger, and many people dropped out of school to urge the Empress Dowager Ci 'an to give orders. This account can only be put on the head of Empress Cian, and she can't help for the time being.
Many articles and film and television works vividly recorded the historical fact that An Dehai's anti-ancestor was killed in the palace. To put it simply, in July of the eighth year of Tongzhi, with the acquiescence of Empress Dowager Cixi, An Dehai left Beijing and went south along the canal in the name of the emperor's wedding and buying royal clothes. According to the ancestral system of the Qing Dynasty, eunuchs were not allowed to leave Beijing. However, An Dehai has nothing to hide. He not only went out of Beijing, but also took women privately, hung the dragon and phoenix flag and accepted bribes. He flaunted all the way and messed up the place. The officials of the Shuntianfu yamen and the Zhili Governor's yamen, whom he first passed, forbeared from making trouble. As a result, it was seized by Ding Baozhen, Shandong Province, and the eunuch left Beijing, which violated the ancestral system. Ci' an, who has been making waves for An Dehai in the palace for a long time, received a game? After she led the military affairs minister to ask for instructions from the Imperial Palace, she immediately called the military affairs minister and the interior minister to discuss with her. When Cixi was ill, Cian was alone. Therefore, everyone agrees: "The ancestral system cannot leave the capital, and criminals are unforgivable. When the law is enforced on the spot. " So Empress Ci 'an made it clear that she agreed to execute An Dehai on the spot in Shandong.
Arrogant An Dehai probably never dreamed of meeting such a fearless advocate as Ding Baozhen in Shandong. Ding was admitted to imperial academy at 33. He used to be editor of Jishi Shu and imperial academy, magistrate of Yuezhou and magistrate of Changsha. In his official career, he is brave, honest and upright, serving the country all his life and loving the people.
It is said that Ding Baozhen has long been very indignant at An Dehai's arrogance. After receiving a report from his subordinates on what An Dehai did all the way, he made a secret statement, complaining about An Dehai's "shocking" illegal behavior and his duty place. He had to stop the trial office to show caution. First, the Qing dynasty did not allow eunuchs to be handed over to outsiders for more than 200 years, "there was no case of sending eunuchs to the provinces"; Second, the dragon robe is a royal garment with its own weaving system. Eunuchs don't have to travel far, and both the Empress Dowager and the Emperor advocate frugality. It is completely unnecessary for eunuchs to go abroad for procurement. Even if it is true, there must be clear laws and documents. Third, eunuchs should return cards as usual, and they must never listen to their arbitrary wandering and meaningless experiments; Fourth, the Dragon and Phoenix Flag is forbidden in the Forbidden City. If he is a eunuch in the imperial palace, he knows etiquette, how dare he violate the system and use it indiscriminately; Fifth, it is not systematic to take female talents on business trips.

On August 2nd, An Dehai was captured by He Yufu, a magistrate of taian county, and then Chen Yuxiang and his party were personally taken to Jin 'an for trial by Ding Baozhen. On August 6th, Ding Baozhen received a secret report from the military department, which said, "The eunuch ran away from home without permission and committed various illegal acts. If you don't punish him severely, why take the Forbidden Palace as an example? Ding Baozhen quickly sent a commission agent to check the eunuch named Liu Bianlan Ling 'an for him, and let his entourage and others testify that it was true and was executed on the spot without trial. No quibbling is allowed. If the eunuch heard the news, he turned back to the direct realm, that is, Zeng Guofan was a genus and strictly followed the Dharma. If there is negligence, the governor only asks about those who are closely related to bandits, such as their followers, and tries to severely punish them separately without asking. " On August 7th, the fifth day after An Dehai was arrested in Shantung, Ding Baozhen personally inspected and executed An Dehai on the spot.
An Dehai was beheaded when she left Beijing, which not only made Cixi lose her heart, but also damaged her face. Many people worry that Ding Baozhen, regardless of the power of Empress Dowager Cixi, will be retaliated by Empress Dowager Cixi and her career will come to an end.
However, Ding Baozhen did not lose his job because of this. This Guizhou native, who is famous for being "strict and powerful", honest and clean, continued to work as the governor of Shandong Province for seven years after killing An Dehai, with remarkable achievements. From this point of view, Empress Dowager Cixi still has a certain politician's mind.
In the second year of Guangxu (1876), Ding Baozhen, who had been governor of Shandong for nearly ten years, was promoted to governor of Sichuan and was received by Emperor Guangxu. He was awarded the titles of "Top Hat, Prince of Shaobao", "Minister of War" and "Right Capital of Duchayuan". And he has been working in this remarkable job for ten years.
When Ding Baozhen first took office, there were cases of theft and robbery in Chengdu every month. Soon after he took office, he cleaned up the bandits, so that the roads in the city were not connected and the households were not closed at night. At that time, the official administration of Sichuan was corrupt and the financial deficit was huge. Cixi wrote the word "national treasure" for Ding Baozhen, which shows that the court has high hopes for Ding Baozhen.
During his ten years in Sichuan, Ding Baozhen was compassionate, down-to-earth and deeply loved by the people. During this period, he compiled the Records of Sichuan Salt Law, which not only summarized the production technology of Sichuan salt wells, but also included a large number of exquisite woodcut illustrations. In the 12th year of Guangxu (1886), Ding Baozhen died at the age of 66 when he was the governor of Sichuan. At that time, the Empress Dowager Ci 'an and the Emperor Tongzhi were long gone, and the real power was in the hands of Cixi. Because Ding Baozhen was honest all his life, there were many people who offended him in officialdom. After his death, many powerful people chased him, but Cixi ignored him. She also posthumously awarded Ding Baozhen as the Prince of Taibao and the "Wencheng" of Shangmei, and allowed Shandong, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places to build Zhongliang Hall for him.
According to the records, because most of the salary paid by the imperial court was used by Ding Baozhen to help the poor, the government official was heavily in debt when he was dying. The funeral was funded by money donated by his entourage. His son Ding Tichang obeyed his father's orders and went by water to pay his respects in order not to disturb the people. The next autumn, the coffin returned to Jinan. The gentry and the people are "homesick, and the soldiers and civilians are worried."
