Change the current middle school "geography" course into "earth" course?

A few days ago, Tong Jinnan, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a professor at the School of Earth Sciences of China Geo University (Wuhan), proposed that the "geography" course in middle schools be changed to "earth" course.

The history of geography education in primary and secondary schools in China began with the "Guimao academic system" in the late Qing Dynasty, which includes geography, geography, natural history and other disciplines, including earth science.

After the founding of New China, there were common sense, nature and science in primary schools and geography in junior high schools, but the early geography was essentially earth science.

1979, two courses of earth science and economic geography are offered in senior high school. After 1982, they merged into geography, and some earth science contents ran through it in different forms.

With the progress of science and technology and the development of disciplines, a lot of new knowledge has entered the junior high school curriculum. In recent years, junior high school geography has added geographic information system and other contents. However, due to the negative influence, non-geographical earth science is gradually deduced from the perspective of modern geography.

Therefore, in March of 20 13, many academicians and experts from the Department of Geography wrote to the relevant leaders of the Central Committee, calling for the integration of "Earth Science Foundation" into junior high school geography curriculum, which was paid attention by the Ministry of Education and reflected in the revised senior high school geography curriculum standard in 20 17, but it was not obvious in fact.

In addition, most of the new knowledge in geosciences only plays an auxiliary role in learning knowledge, and it is difficult to achieve practical results.

Therefore, the core of middle school teaching reform should be to turn geography into earth science and reorganize teaching content.

Tong Jinnan believes that the "geography" course in middle schools in China will be changed to "earth science".

This is more in line with the knowledge content of today's middle school curriculum in theory, and more in line with the basic knowledge needs of modern scientific development in connotation. It can better serve the construction of "Study on a Livable Earth and a Healthy Earth" strategically, and practice Scientific Outlook on Development's thought and world outlook on ecological civilization and human destiny from the perspective of the whole earth system.

In order to avoid being bound by the development of subject connotation, it is suggested to use "Earth" directly in the title of junior high school curriculum, which mainly introduces the basic knowledge and principle of human existence-Earth, its basic composition and structure, process and law, Earth and human beings.

Among them, primary school and junior high school focus on objective facts and phenomena and actual observation, while senior high school focuses on temporal and spatial dynamic analysis and interpersonal enlightenment.

It is hoped that the Ministry of Education will organize relevant experts in the field of geosciences to carry out research in time, reconstruct the relevant content system of primary and secondary schools, organically combine the relevant professional knowledge of colleges and universities, and do a good job in the knowledge planning and layout of primary and secondary schools.
