How to plan the career of IT consultant?

1. Technical consultants specialize in some system products and languages, so it is more difficult to get in touch with the real business of the enterprise in the middle and early stage of career development, and there are relatively few opportunities to cultivate in-depth understanding of the business. Of course, some senior technical consultants will gradually improve their business sense through project accumulation and horizontal comparison between projects.

2. Functional consultants generally need to understand the business and match the business requirements with the system products, so they will also cultivate their understanding of the business and even their ability to optimize the business. Compared with technical consultants, they have the ability of product design and business analysis, and can also directly connect with business departments, and their personal influence and resource aggregation ability will also be improved. The functional consulting business spends time on system products and business understanding at the same time, and that kind of time investment determines the lack of depth, which is more like a compound talent. Combined with practical experience, some technical consultants were transformed into functional consultants. They know the technology, know the business and don't fall for it. Project implementation under specific products has great advantages. As for functional consultants, it is not difficult to turn to technology, because they have a wider road and more choices. To sum up, comparing the two, based on my own consideration (not necessarily comprehensive), if I want to cut into the field of management consulting, these two backgrounds are very difficult, and they are both on different tracks. However, the function consultant is relatively better. If you go to Party A, it is actually very popular, but you will meet the first ceiling in a few years.

Generally speaking, the development of IT consulting is not very good. There is a simple reason. IT consulting is just about informatization, and it is difficult to involve management, strategy, market and so on. Fundamentally speaking, enterprise software helps enterprises to improve efficiency and standardize functions, which belongs to the policy implementation level. If you do IT consulting, the technology is not as good as going directly to an Internet company to do research and development, because the research and development of consulting companies lacks core technology and is only doing upper-level applications. If you are a consultant, you'd better go to strategic management consulting, or do other functions directly in the enterprise. Because even if you change jobs, you will go to the departments related to enterprise IT functions.
