The State Oceanic Administration Key Laboratory of Polar Science was formally established on September 28th, 2004. Relying on China Polar Research Institute, the laboratory focuses on the national demand of polar exploration in China and the major frontier scientific issues of polar scientific research, gives full play to the role of research platforms such as "Snow Dragon" ship and China Antarctic and Antarctic research station, establishes an open, joint, mobile and competitive operation mechanism, and shares the samples, data and information resources obtained from polar exploration. Through the observation of polar science, the continuous construction of experimental system and the accumulation of scientific research, great theoretical and technological achievements have been made in some basic research and application fields of polar science, a polar scientific research team with international influence has been trained and brought up, and a world-class polar scientific research cooperation center has been gradually formed, which has safeguarded China's polar rights and interests and served the national economic construction.

(1) Research direction of polar ice and snow and marine environment
On the basis of long-term continuous field observation, satellite remote sensing observation and laboratory analysis, through the innovation of theory and research methods, the key physical and chemical processes of polar ice sheets, glaciers, ice shelves, sea ice, oceans and atmosphere and their changes are emphatically studied, and the response and feedback of polar ice and snow and oceans to global changes are understood, including:

(2) The research direction of polar ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling and space weather.
Give full play to the geographical advantages of Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and Huanghe Station in China, Arctic, which are located at the latitude of the earth's polar gap and form a yoke, establish a field observation system of polar space physics, continuously monitor the polar space environment, carry out the coupling study of polar ionosphere and magnetosphere, further understand the key process of magnetosphere, ionosphere and upper atmosphere responding to solar activities, and explore the physical methods of field reporting and forecasting space weather by using polar ground observation stations.
