Jiang, referred to as Xunyang for short, is a city divided into districts in Jiangxi Province (prefecture level), which was called Chaisang, Jiangzhou and Xunyang in ancient times. Located at the junction of Jiangxi, Hubei, Anhui and Hunan provinces, it is adjacent to Poyang County, Shangrao City, Anhui Province and dongzhi county, Chizhou City in the east. Jiujiang is 270 kilometers long from east to west and 140 kilometers wide from north to south, with a total area of 1948+0 square kilometers.

The name of Jiujiang was first recorded in Historical Records of Gong Yu, such as the empty sound of Jiujiang, crossing Jiujiang to Dongling. Jiujiang appellation has two sources. First, nine is the largest number considered by ancient China people. Jiujiang means a land where many waters meet, and nine means nothing.
Second, it is considered that nine rivers (namely Ganjiang River, Poyang River, Surplus Water, Xiushui Water, Rushing Water, Xushui Water, Shushui Water, Nanshui Water and Pengshui Water) flow into Pengyize, which is the place where the nine rivers meet. The Yangtze River flows through Jiujiang waters and flows into Poyang Lake and the rivers adjacent to Jiangxi, Hubei and Anhui provinces.
