Skills in the Exploration Stage of Psychological Counseling

Psychological counseling is divided into three stages. The first stage is the exploration stage. In the exploration stage, as long as psychological counselors listen to the statements of visitors and collect information, they will prepare and pave the way for the follow-up counseling.

This stage will take advantage of some opportunities, including listening, slight encouragement, restatement, open-ended questions about ideas, emotional reflection, emotional expression and open-ended questions about emotions.

Emotional reaction:

For example:

You are angry that your husband didn't come home all night.

You seem to feel happy after telling your boss that you don't want to work overtime any more.

Emotional disclosure: revealing the feelings of psychological counselors. It is a kind of self-exposure.

For example, when the big exam approaches, I know how I feel. I felt very nervous at that time.

I felt nervous when I heard what you just said.

If I were in that situation, I would be nervous, too.

It is a reaction in three situations.

Open-ended questions about emotions:

For example:

How did you feel when he said those words?

Tell me more about your feelings about it.
