Basic situation of RTP

Established in 1959, North Carolina Triangle Research Park (RTP) is the largest science and technology park in the United States, covering an area of 7,000 acres (about 28 square kilometers, 42,500 acres), of which the undeveloped area is 1 100 acres (about 4.5 square kilometers, 6700 acres). RTP is located in the center of the triangle formed by Duke University, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. Relying on the excellent educational and scientific research environment of the above three universities, RTP has attracted many multinational companies such as Bayer, BASF, Cisco, IBM and Nortel to set up R&D centers. At present, there are more than 100 R&D institutions in RTP, employing about 38,500 employees. The total annual salary is $2.7 billion.

RTP Economic Zone mainly involves 14 industrial clusters, including agricultural products, construction equipment, instrument manufacturing and services, commercial services, communication equipment, building materials, large-scale construction contracting, heavy machinery, commodity distribution services, food processing, power generation, power transmission, pharmaceutical/biotechnology and tobacco industries.

Michael E. Porter, a professor at Harvard Business School, was entrusted by the American Competitiveness Research Council to set up an industrial cluster innovation research group, which investigated five regions, including Atlanta, RTP, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Wichita. The research results show that RTP has the following characteristics:

1. There are many R&D centers involving different industrial clusters.

2. RTP is ahead of other regions in the rapidly developing industrial clusters.

3. The cost caused by competition in other regions is not great.

4. Good labor training facilities and first-class scientific research institutions.

5. High standard of federal and state R&D investment.

High standard living environment, relatively low unemployment rate and relatively high quality of life.

In order to maintain the leading position of RTP, the park has formulated a "Keep Leading" plan, which will pay special attention to eight industrial clusters, including pharmacy, biotechnology and infectious diseases, agricultural biotechnology, computer processing technology, advanced medical care, analytical instruments, nanotechnology and information technology. RTP region plans to create 654.38 million+new jobs in the next five years.

RTP signed a cooperation agreement with wuxi new district Friendship Park on 1999, which confirmed the comprehensive cooperation between the two sides in information exchange, external publicity, talent exchange, planning and construction, technology incubation, technology application and transformation. Over the years, through the efforts of both sides, some achievements have been made at many levels. At the same time, Mr Robertson, president of RTP, is also a member of wuxi new district International Consulting Annual Meeting and has visited Wuxi many times.

RTP adjoins three counties: Durham County, Orange County (Chapel Hill) and Wake County (Raleigh). Among them, Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina.
