Introduction:

Cave Temple is located at the foot of Dali Mountain, nine kilometers northeast of gongyi city, with beautiful scenery. It was once known as "a paradise of rock clouds in fog". There are five grottoes, 1,000 niches, 255 small niches, three statues of Mo Yan, 7,743 carved Buddha statues and more than 200 inscriptions in the Cave Temple. The fifteen pictures of the Empress Dowager Cixi's ritual Buddha preserved here are rigorous in composition, skillful in techniques and distinctive in characters, which can be described as treasures in Buddhist art gardens.

Gongyi Grottoes were excavated by the royal family in the Northern Wei Dynasty. Emperor Xiaowen founded a temple. In Xuan Wudi, he began to carve stones for caves and carved thousands of Buddha statues. Later, the East, West, Wei, Tang and Song Dynasties carved some small niches here one after another. The cave temple was excavated after Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, which combined the foreign influence of Buddhist art and Han art in the Central Plains.
