The properties that IIS can set include virtual directory and access rights, default file name, and whether browsing the directory is allowed. IIS is developed under the Windows operating system platform, which limits it to run only under this operating system. In WindowsXPProfessional, some functions of IIS are limited to distinguish them from WindowsServer2003.

IIS6.0 based on WindowsServer2003, WindowsVistaHomePremium and WindowsXP64bit includes FTP, NNTP and HTTP/HTTPS services. IIS.7.0 comes with WindowsVista and WindowsServer2008.
