What are the pragmatic theories?

Relevance theory, conversational implicature, speech act theory, cooperative principle, politeness principle.

Relevance theory is a cognitive pragmatic theory. It was put forward by Sperber and Wilson in Relevance: Communication and Cognition. Based on the concept and principle of relevance, this paper analyzes the discourse theory in verbal communication.

Relevance principle includes: cognitive principle, that is, the coincidence of human cognitive tendency with maximum relevance; Communicative principle, that is, every discourse (or other behavior of inferential communication) should be assumed to be the best relevance of the discourse or behavior itself. In relevance theory, relevance is considered as a feature of words, thoughts, behaviors and situations. Input cognitive process.

2. "Conversational implicature" was first put forward by American philosopher Grice. It is the core of pragmatics and plays a very important role in verbal communication. The theory of "conversational implicature" has attracted extensive attention in philosophy and linguistics because of its novel and important content.

3. Speech act theory is a philosophy of language. Austin in Britain and Searle in America developed it. Austin believes that language is a special way of human behavior, and people can't do without speech acts such as speaking and writing in the actual communication process. The central topic of linguistic analysis philosophy should be to study the essence and internal logical structure of this speech act.

4. The cooperative principle was put forward by Grice, a famous American language philosopher, in his speech 1967 at Harvard University.

Grice believes that in the process of people's communication, both sides of the dialogue seem to follow some principles intentionally or unintentionally in order to cooperate effectively and complete the communication task. Therefore, H.P.Grice put forward the "cooperative principle" (CP for short) in the conversation.

5. 1983 Leech, a famous British scholar, expounded the important role of politeness in language communication in the book Principles of Pragmatics. He put forward politeness principle for the first time, and thought that politeness principle and Grice's cooperative principle were two principles in communication. Leech divides politeness principles into six categories, each of which includes one criterion and two sub-criteria.
