Gaochun District, located at the southernmost tip of Nanjing, is known as the back garden and south gate of Nanjing. The low hills in the east of Gaochun District are the remnants of Maoshan Mountains, extending in the northeast-southwest direction, and the mountains are gentle, which is the watershed between Taihu Lake water system and Shuiyangjiang and Qingyijiang water systems-the western polder area is the lake plain of the ancient city, Shijiu and Danyang Lake, with low terrain and criss-crossing rivers and ditches. Rivers in the eastern hilly area flow eastward into Taihu Lake, and the river network density is sparse; The rivers in the western polder area cross the Yangtze River in the west, and the river network density is high.

Shijiu Lake is a boundary lake in Lishui District, Gaochun District, dangtu county District and Bowang District of Maanshan City, Anhui Province, also known as Beihu Lake, which is differentiated from the ancient Danyang Lake. The lake mainly comes from Qingyi River and Shuiyangjiang River systems in southern Anhui, and flows into the Yangtze River from Guxi River and Qingshui River in Dangtu. Now the lake covers an area of 207 square kilometers, with an average water depth of 1.67 meters. Shijiu Lake is closely related to Qinhuai River. Before the Ming Dynasty, Rouzhi Mountain in the southwest of Lishui District was the watershed between Qinhuai River and Shijiu Lake. The water to the north of Ganggang belonged to Qinhuai River system, and the water to the south of Ganggang belonged to Shijiu Lake system.

Gucheng Lake is located in the south of Gaochun District, also known as Hu Xiaonan. The lake area belongs to Gaochun District of Anhui Province and Xuancheng City, but Gaochun District is the main one, and it is a part of the ancient Danyang Lake together with Shijiu Lake in history. At present, the lake covers an area of 35.7 square kilometers with an average water depth of 1.6 meters. Lake water mainly comes from Shuiyangjiang River and Qingyijiang River in Anhui, and can be connected with Taihu Lake water system through Xu Xi River and Caohe River between Liyang and Yixing. The ancient town on the east bank of Shijiu Lake is the starting point of Xu Xi, and it is also the military center of Wu, Chu and Yue during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period.
