Cangzhou Iron Lion Cultural Relics Protection

19th century ago, Cangzhou Iron Lion was still safe and sound after more than 800 years of wind and rain. In the eighth year of Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty (1803), the iron lion was blown down by the strong wind, and was lifted up in the nineteenth year of Guangxu (1893), and the jaw, abdomen and tail were seriously damaged. 1956, in order to protect the iron lion, a shelter building was built. However, it was later found that the corrosion was more serious in the semi-closed environment, so the building had to be demolished at 1972 and restored to the open air. 1984, because the lion's feet were trapped in the soil for a long time, a 2-meter-high pedestal was built next to the lion, and the iron lion was moved on it, and its legs were reinforced with cement. However, this repair also allowed water to enter the iron lion's body. After continuous expansion and contraction in winter and summer, the lion's leg finally split in a few years. Starting from 1995, a protective steel pipe bracket was installed outside the iron lion's body to repair the broken quadruped. However, because many cement blocks are difficult to take out, dozens of cracks and residual holes have appeared on the surface of the iron lion.

In Hebei, the Iron Lion in Cangzhou is called the "Three Treasures of Hebei" together with the Kaiyuan Temple Tower in Dingzhou and the Bodhisattva statue in Zhengding, longxing temple ("Dingzhou Tower of Cangzhou Lion, the Great Bodhisattva in Zhengding House"), and the nickname "Lion City" of Cangzhou refers to the "Dingzhou Tower of Cangzhou Lion and Zhengding Bodhisattva Zhao Zhouqiao". The casting process adopted by Iron Lion is "mud Fan Ming casting". In the casting process, * * * used more than 600 pieces of 30-50 cm square casting molds. It provides valuable materials for studying the history of metallurgy, sculpture and Buddhism in ancient China, and also occupies an important position in the history of smelting in the world.

In 2006, China Heritage Research Institute included the protection of iron lions in its scientific research project. After the three-dimensional spectral analysis of the lion, it is envisaged to remove the external bracket and fix it with the internal bracket.

"For the iron lion, in addition to strengthening monitoring, we still call on all sectors of society to pay attention to the protection and research of giant outdoor cast iron cultural relics, and list Cangzhou Iron Lion, Shanxi Pujin Ferry Iron Bull and Dangyang Tower as special topics to make these national treasures' longevity'."
