"Today, there is nothing to do with Zhao, two thousand miles away, hundreds of thousands of armour, thousands of chariots and horses, ten years of millet support, Changshan in the west, Hezhang in the south, Qinghe in the east, Yan in the north, and Yan in the weak country, which is not enough for fear. Those who fear that Qin will harm the world have nothing to do with Zhao."
At the peak of Zhao's territory, geographically speaking, it is east to Bohai Bay, south to Hengshui, north to Yishui and west to the southern foot of Yinshan Mountain in western Inner Mongolia. That includes parts of Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Shandong and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Specifically, under the conquest of King Wuling of Zhao, the northwest frontier of Zhao arrived in the yinshan mountains, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. After King Wuling of Zhao established Wuyuan and Yunzhong counties, he also occupied the northeast of Hetao Plain, and Suide and Yichuan in northern Shaanxi also belonged to Zhao.
In the southeast of Shanxi, roughly in Heshun, counties, eldest son, Huguan, Gaoping and the north of Xiangyuan are all Zhao's territory, while the land in Qixian, Wenshui and Lishi, west of Shanxi's watershed, is also Zhao's.
In the northwest of Hebei Province, the territory of Zhao State has reached the east of Yuxian in the Sanggan River basin. South of Yishui, the central government also belongs to Zhao, and east to Levin, Wen 'an, Dacheng and Cangxian. The west of the canal south of Cangxian County (except south of Zhangshui) also belongs to Zhao's territory.
In addition, it also includes the northwest of Liaocheng, Shandong Province, and there are counties such as Pingyuan, Yucheng and Changqing. There are Neihuang, Qingfeng, Tangyin, Qixian and Huojia counties in northern Henan, but they are sometimes occupied by Wei.
Due to the vast territory of Zhao State, the natural and geographical conditions are very complicated. Its west belongs to Inner Mongolia Plateau, Northern Shaanxi Plateau and Shanxi Plateau, and only the capital Handan belongs to North China Plain.
There are Hetao Plain in the north, Datong Basin, Taiyuan Basin and Changzhi Basin in the middle. The yinshan mountains is in the northwest, with several mountains in the middle. Guanshan, Luya Mountain, Luliang Mountain, Yunzhongshan Mountain, Hengshan Mountain, Wutai Mountain and Taihang Mountain divide the whole territory into several parts. In the east is the North China Plain. The whole terrain is high in the west and low in the east.
In the whole territory, there are few areas suitable for farming, only the North China Plain near Handan, several basins in Shanxi and Hetao areas developed to the reign of King Wuling of Zhao. Therefore, the evaluation of Zhao in Historical Records and Hanshu is:
"Zhongshan is vast and sparsely populated" and "Zhao and Zhongshan are vast and sparsely populated".
Agriculture is not very developed because of the thin land. Generally, agriculture in Shanxi Plateau can only be harvested once a year, while grain in Hebei North China Plain can only be harvested three times a year, which is far from agriculture in the south of the Yangtze River. However, the people used their own advantages to develop their own economy and realized the economic development of Zhao in the Warring States Period.
