Wang Wei's famous sentence "The desert is lonely and the smoke is straight, and the long river sets the yen" uses many figures of speech, among which duality and metaphor are the most obvious. Here, there is no direct use of "image" or other obvious figurative words, but by comparing "solitary smoke" to a straight line and "sunset" to a circle, the scene of smoke rising into the sky in the desert and the vastness and calmness of the river in the sunset are vividly displayed. These two poems are symmetrical in structure, and the number of words and structure of each sentence correspond to each other, forming a sense of rhythm and balance.
