Personal experience

In the late 1950s, Gu Jia worked as a pianist in Zhangxian nightclub in Wan Chai and Dongying Mansion nightclub, and formed a small band called "Gu Jia Big Band". 196 1 year, after listening to Gu Jia _' s performance in a nightclub, the principal of BerkleeCollegeofMusic of the United States took the initiative to apply for a scholarship for him, invited him to continue his studies, and received strong support and funding from Shao Yifu, so Gu Jia _ went to the United States and received a two-year music training course. While studying in the same year, Gu Jia took part in the composition competition of the film "Can't Love" with his work "Dream". As a result, he stood out and became an interlude in the film, which was his first appearance in the music world.

1967, the radio TV station started broadcasting. At the invitation of Yang, he joined the TV station and was responsible for composing music and music planning. In the late 1960s, Yao Surong, Qingshan, Yan Yang and other Taiwanese singers dominated, which set off an upsurge of contemporary Mandarin music. Since then, Hong Kong has finally had its own pop music, and Cantonese songs have finally begun to be free from discrimination. Later, Gu Jia, Huang Jingshan and Tan were called "Iron Triangle". The theme music that they contributed individually or jointly to local martial arts dramas is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and it is still a familiar melody for the public today after more than 20 years.

1973, Gu Jia _ At the invitation of TV director Wang Tianlin, he wrote the theme song for the wireless TV series "In Cry and Cry", which set off a wave of Cantonese pop music. Together with Samuel Hui's Ghost Horse, it was called the pioneering work of Cantonese pop music. From the1970s to the end of1980s, the unique musical style Gu Jia _, which developed from China's minor form, to Huang Zhesi's lyrics written in Cantonese but full of traditional Chinese colors, this group, which was later called "Huang Hui", dominated the Hong Kong pop music scene for 20 years and is still talked about by people. Generally speaking, Hong Kong people don't know much about China's traditional literature, but when the mainland was still singing "Sailing at sea depends on the helmsman", several generations of Hong Kong people had a general impression of China in the works of David Henry Hwang and other lyricists at the same time. For example, in Chu Liuxiang, "Lakes and seas wash my heart, rivers and mountains float my shadow". Another example is "Laughing at the Sea" written by James ·J·s· Wang himself: "When the sea laughs, the tides on both sides of the strait ebb and flow, and only remember the present. When the sky laughs, the tide of the world comes one after another. Who wins and who loses knows. Mountains and rivers laugh, misty rain is far away, and waves wash away the beauty of the world of mortals. The breeze laughs, and if it is lonely, there is still a night of pride. " Then, on the beach, the mainland audience finally realized the Chinese style interpreted by colonial Hong Kong: "The waves are surging, and the Wan Li River will never stop. After all, things in the world have become a trend. "

It is definitely not a compliment to say that Gu Jia alone held up half the sky in Hong Kong's entertainment circle in the 1970s. It is precisely because of Gu Jia, who has been writing music for the theme song of Hong Kong Opera behind the scenes that the theme song of Hong Kong Opera has found its own characteristics and style, and at the same time laid the foundation for the mainstream pop music in Hong Kong music scene for more than ten years.

Gu Jia was awarded the MBE Medal by the Queen of England in 1982 and the Bronze Bauhinia Medal by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 1998. There are countless other awards, the most important of which are the Music Achievement Award of Hong Kong Composers and Lyrics Association, the highest honor award of Radio Television Hong Kong's top ten Chinese golden songs (predecessor of the Golden Needle Award), the best music of the Asian Film Festival, the Hong Kong Film Award, the Taiwan Golden Horse Award and so on.

Today, Gu Jia moved to Canada and basically retired. A few years ago, I wrote a couplet at my friend Tan's funeral: "Under the Lion Mountain, flying knives became masterpieces, and after several storms, half-life feelings last forever."

Gu Jiahui, the godfather of Hong Kong music, has not sung for a long time since Wong Kar-wai died. 20 12, 12, 12, master Gu Jia _ classic concert officially started. Huang Yaoming, George Lam and a number of other superstars took the stage to pay tribute to Gu Jia, and Gu Jia also showed his talent in commanding the team on the stage.
