In recent years, with the adjustment of Myanmar government's internal and external policies, China-Myanmar economic, trade and cultural exchanges have gradually deepened, and Chinese education, which was interrupted for nearly 40 years, is gradually recovering in a diversified situation.

There are about 2.5 million overseas Chinese in Myanmar, most of whom are from Fujian, followed by Yunnan and Guangdong. Among them, overseas Chinese in Fujian and Guangdong mainly live in Yangon, the capital, and the south-central region (commonly known as "Lower Burma"), while in Mandalay and other regions in the north (commonly known as "Upper Burma"), Yunnan people are the main ones.

According to the statistics of Chinese communities in Myanmar, such as Myanmar Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Myanmar Fujian Association, Myanmar Guangdong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, before Myanmar was excluded by China in the 1960s, there were about 300 Chinese primary schools and more than 200 Chinese junior and senior high schools in Myanmar. In the mid-to-late 1960s, all of them were nationalized, and most of them were changed to official schools, which no longer taught in Chinese, and the form of Chinese schools basically disappeared. Therefore, overseas Chinese over the age of 40 in Myanmar have basically not received the language and culture education of their home country, and most of them can't speak Chinese.

However, even when Chinese schools were banned, many overseas Chinese in Myanmar of the older generation enthusiastically set up family Chinese cram schools to teach after school hours. According to government regulations, each class has no more than 20 students. There are also some children of overseas Chinese who have been exposed to the language of the motherland by reading Buddhist scriptures in Chinese in temples.

In the late 1980s, the Myanmar government adjusted its domestic and foreign policies, and the Chinese education environment in Myanmar was relatively relaxed. Some family cram schools have been merged and expanded, and Chinese communities have opened Chinese schools in the name of cram schools, and some have reached hundreds or even thousands.

Due to the need of China-Myanmar border trade, Chinese education is urgently needed in northern Myanmar. With the permission of the local government, various Chinese schools have been set up, and many Burmese also send their children to Chinese schools to study.

Comparatively speaking, the development of Chinese education in "Lower Myanmar" Yangon is relatively slow. So far, there are only a few schools in China, but they are still struggling to survive and find room for development.

Among them, Fuxing Language and Computer College, funded by Fujian Association in Myanmar at the end of 2002, has opened 8 Chinese proficiency classes, 6 proficiency test classes, 8 Chinese conversation classes and 5 computer training classes, and nearly 800 Chinese overseas Chinese children aged 0-30 have studied Chinese here.

The "Oriental Language and Business Center" jointly founded by eight Myanmar-China associations, including the Myanmar Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Myanmar Fujian Association and the Myanmar Guangdong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has received more than 200 students since its establishment more than a year ago. Taking the Chinese test as the main line, five Chinese proficiency classes have been set up and seven levels of half-day Chinese teaching have been carried out. At the same time, a full-time English-Chinese bilingual kindergarten was established to teach children completely. (Lu Feng Yu Xianlun)
