Yunnan Province, called Yun or Dian for short, is one of the 23 provinces in China. Located in the southwest, Kunming, the provincial capital, is between 2 1 8' and 29 15' north latitude and 97 31'~1east longitude.
Yunnan Province is a low-latitude inland area, with the Tropic of Cancer running across the south, with high terrain in the northwest and low terrain in the southeast, and gradually descending from north to south. It belongs to mountainous plateau topography, and the mountainous area accounts for 88.64% of the total area of the province, spanning six major water systems: Yangtze River, Pearl River, Yuanjiang River, Lancang River, Nujiang River and Daying River. The climate of Yunnan province basically belongs to subtropical and tropical monsoon climate, while the northwest of Yunnan belongs to plateau and mountain climate. Yunnan has the largest number of animal and plant species in China, and is known as the kingdom of animals and plants and the kingdom of nonferrous metals.

Yunnan belongs to mountainous plateau topography, in which the middle altitude area of 1000 ~ 3500m accounts for 87.2 1% of the whole province's land area, and most of Yunnan Province is located in the middle altitude area. The area below the slope of 25 degrees accounts for 56.46% of the land area. In terms of landform types, the areas of plains, terraces, hills and mountains account for 4.85%, 1.55%, 4.96% and 88.64% respectively.
The terrain is bounded by Yuanjiang Valley and the wide valley in the southern section of Yunling Mountain Range, which is divided into two major terrain areas: east and west. East Yunnan and Central Yunnan Plateau are part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with an average elevation of about 2000 meters. They are characterized by gently undulating hills and round hills, and have various types of karst landforms. Mountains and canyons alternate in the west, and the terrain is steep. The relative height difference between mountains and canyons exceeds 1000 meters.
