Southern Medical University, located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is the only one of the first batch of national key universities in Guangdong Province, one of the first eight universities in China to offer eight-year clinical medicine, and the only medical school among the key universities in Guangdong Province.
The first batch of excellent doctors (Chinese medicine) education and training program pilot universities in China. The school has been selected into the national high-level university construction graduate program, the 2.0 base for training top-notch students in basic disciplines, the national "characteristic key discipline project" construction universities, and the first batch of national pilot universities for excellent doctoral education and training programs.
The school, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of Chinese People's Liberation Army, was established in 195 1, was identified as a national key university in 1979, and became the first batch of master's degree awarding units approved by the State Council in 198 1. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University.

There are 5 national key disciplines and cultivation disciplines, 6 key disciplines in state administration of traditional chinese medicine and 10 in Guangdong. 10 discipline ranks among the top in ESI 1‰, and clinical medicine ranks among the top in ESI 1‰, ranking 52nd in China.
Teaching construction
By April 2023, the school had 7 national majors, 6 Guangdong majors 16, 6 famous majors in Guangdong province, 23 national first-class undergraduate majors, 7 national first-class undergraduate majors 17, and the first batch of national virtual teaching and research office construction pilot projects 1.
By the end of 20 19 and 12, the school has established 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects and 1 national off-campus practice bases for college students. 20 national brand courses have been completed.
