Gansu Institute of Water Conservancy Science was founded in 1979, formerly known as the Science and Technology Department of the Provincial Water Resources Department. It was founded as Gansu Institute of Water Conservancy, and was renamed as Gansu Institute of Water Conservancy in April 2003 16.

The subordinate institutions are:

4 research institutes, 2 training centers, 1 experimental base, 1 quality inspection station, 1 R&D team of scientific and technological development entities.

Carry out high-level scientific research in water resources and environment, rural water conservancy, water conservancy and hydropower engineering, rainwater resources utilization and other professional research directions, extensively carry out planning and design, feasibility study, technical consultation, technical demonstration and popularization and application of small-scale water conservancy and hydropower projects, including irrigation planning, river regulation, water-saving irrigation, water supply in towns and villages, reinforcement of dangerous reservoirs, etc., and have the ability to undertake tasks such as quality inspection of water conservancy and hydropower projects in the province, training of irrigation test technology, and information exchange of water conservancy science and technology.
