Why is Wuxi called Wuxi?

There are two opinions about the origin of Wuxi place names.

The first one is the popular one now. According to this view, lead and tin were produced in Xishan during the Zhou and Qin Dynasties and were exhausted in the Han Dynasty, hence the name "Wuxi". In the Xin Mang period, tin production began again, and the county name was changed to "Youxi", and it was changed to Wuxi in the early Eastern Han Dynasty. This statement can be found in Lu Yu's Records of Huishan Temple in the Tang Dynasty: "Shandong Peak (referring to the eastern peak of Huishan, that is, Xishan Mountain), when lead and tin were produced in the Zhou and Qin Dynasties, reached the Han side, so Wuxi County was built and belonged to Huiji. Guangwu is filial, and the tin fruit is exhausted. Shun Di is more Wuxi County, which belongs to Wu County. " This statement has been recorded in Wuxi local chronicles in past dynasties.

However, the Qing Guangxu's "Jingui County Records of Wuxi County" said: "When Wang Mang changed the county name, it was often the opposite of the old name." Therefore, "tin was renamed after it was released, and it was almost unfounded that tin was filial and revived."

Another view is that Wuxi is one of the ancient place names in Vietnam. "Nothing" is a phrase and has no practical meaning. The original meaning of "Xi" has been lost for too long because of the ancient Vietnamese language, and it is impossible to verify it. This statement is the conclusion drawn by some toponymists, linguists and historical geographers on the basis of summarizing the academic achievements of predecessors and through the investigation and study of a large number of place names in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. They believe that many other place names in Wuxi and Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, such as Fujiao, Yuhang, Jurong and Gusu, are "neck and neck" place names. Although the initials are written in different ways, the ancient sounds are the same or similar, and they are all words in ancient Vietnamese, which has no practical significance. With the migration, dispersion and integration of clans in ancient wuyue with Huaxia nationality, the original meanings of these place names gradually disappeared, but some of them were preserved because of the use of Chinese characters to record pronunciation. Later, people don't know the origin, and often count on the meaning of literature, thus making a wrong explanation.

Some scholars believe that "Wuxi" is named after an ancient Yue tribe living in Wuxi area with "bird tube" as its totem, and its original meaning should be "god bird".
