I want to learn something about detective and what books to read. Better have a theory and a list, thank you!

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle

Agatha christie's grandmother wrote a lot, and especially recommended classic works such as No Man's Life, Poirot Series and Miss Ma Puer Series!

Josephine Tieyi's Daughter of Time, Miss Ping's Thoughts and Singing Sand.

Allan Poe's Scarab

And Quinn's.

1, The Mystery of the Roman Hat (1929)

This is the first part of the Quinn series, and it is also a very wonderful one. Quinn series runs through the theme of the country name and has influenced it until now, which has cultivated my habit of doubting everything. That's what's strange. There must be a reason. This is particularly evident in Roman hats. There are a large number of suspects in the theater murder case, which brings great difficulties to solving the case, but everything depends on reasoning. Only by reasoning can we get out of the fog and quickly lock the murderer.

★2. The powder puzzle of Francci apartment (also known as the powder puzzle) (1930).

It has the usual characteristics of Quinn's early works, which I read earlier. At that time, I never guessed who the murderer was, and I began to like Quinn from then on. This novel has an amazing reasoning, which is highly recommended. And the photos of bodies found in shop windows have gradually become historical classics. On reasoning, this book definitely challenges the highest logical thinking. This is one of the reasons why I like this book very much.

★3. The mystery of Dutch shoes (193 1)

Many friends call this book one of the three famous books in the country name series. Hatefully, this is the first Quinn book I read. I didn't guess the murderer at all. I only remember that I was surprised at the end that the reasoning was so simple.

While enjoying this gap, I quietly started my pursuit of Quinn, reading one by one. As Quinn's enlightenment to me, I naturally miss it very much. As one of the three masterpieces of the country name series, it really makes sense!

★4. Greek coffin mystery (1932)

It can be called the most tortuous and bizarre work in the golden age, challenging readers' intelligence and endurance to the limit, with four cases broken and wonderful exceptions. Although the process of studying at that time was very long, I endured it all the time and gained the final fruit. Remember that there are two versions of this book online, but be sure to read the "full version" instead of the short version, which will lose a lot of things. You can also see Quinn's great growth in this series!

★5. The Mystery of the Egyptian Cross (1932)

Four headless murders with twists and turns, Gothic mysteries and crime scenes, complicated and confusing storylines, and works that challenge the limits of rationality are also the top ten works on my blacklist. After reading it, I can only say, "It really deserves its reputation!" . Unfortunately, this book was not published in Chinese mainland!

★ 6. The Tragedy of X (1932)

What is perfection? This is called perfection! Genius weapon, mysterious message before death, bizarre secret room murder, gorgeous trick, abrupt plot, Doleru Ryan's debut. This novel brings together too many elements to make it perfect and becomes one of the classic masterpieces in the history of mystery novels.

★ 7. The tragedy of Y (1932)

Compared with the average perfection of X, Y is an abrupt perfection. Every perfect element of "X" has a relatively average weight, while "Y" has quite a few elements of perfect mystery novels, which adds some shock! This is a gorgeous mystery novel and a thought-provoking mystery story. Simply put, this is a "dream" mystery novel.

★8. The Mystery of American Guns (1933)

The tricks in this book are amazing, but I still see through them. But if you don't analyze it carefully, you will still fall into a strange circle and be fooled by the author. Actually, it's a bit of unfair competition. This time, the scene of the suspect is even more grand.

More than 20 thousand spectators in the amphitheater were all suspects, but in full view, the cowboy was shot. After a rigorous search, it was found that the murder weapon was gone. What is the truth? The truth is amazing! !

★9. The Twins Mystery (1933)

The killing mode of the closed villa, the panic and tension caused by the mountain fire, the shocking tactics, the dramatic process and ending. This book also belongs to a series of country names, formerly known as The Mystery of Siam Twins (note: Siam = Thailand).

★ 10, the tragedy of z (1933)

The story is plain, and the murderer's reasoning is not difficult. The description in the last paragraph feels a bit artificial, which reminds people of some cheap movies. But the composition of the mystery is quite attractive. Reading focus: Mr. Ryan's human nature display!

★ 1 1, the last case of Drury Lane (1933) hasn't received much praise for this book, but I found it very enjoyable when I read it. Because it is the last book, I do have some foresight, which is not a happy thing. Seeing Mr. Ryan, a detective who just appeared for two years but attracted me deeply, died like that, I was a little sad and disappointed in my chest. Just four stories carved a perfect detective image in my heart. I'm really touched!

★ 12, China orange mystery (1934)

Seriously, if it weren't for the Chamber of Secrets, the score of this work might be higher. Although it is one of the top ten works of the secret room in history, I don't quite agree with this secret room. Maybe I don't understand the essence. However, the sentence "everything is unreasonable for a reason" has been profoundly displayed here, and I have a deeper understanding through this book. I'm puzzled and mysterious about the scenes depicting China people. After all, I am from China.

★ 13, Crazy Afternoon Tea (also known as The Adventures of Quinn) (1934)

Including 1 1 short stories, which belong to the puzzle-solving works in the strict golden age, each novel can be divided into a very high-level puzzle. Friends who challenge reasoning, might as well stop before Quinn makes an explanation, clear their minds and challenge Elle Quinn!

★ 14, Mystery of Spanish shawl (1935)

Although I am confused by doubting my favorite writer, this work is really unexpected and insensitive. The reasoning process is very simple, but the author's disguise is not bad.

★ 15, halfway house (1936)

As can be seen, when writing this work, ellery has turned from pure puzzle solving to another division. This problem is also influenced by Hollywood and glossy magazines. But the plot is perfect, and there are shocking reasoning paragraphs, which make people hooked. In future works, there will be a MM almost every time ... But as far as reasoning and storytelling are concerned, The Midway House is definitely a masterpiece.

★ 16, The Gate of Life and Death (1937)

Too much chance and necessity can constitute a case that is difficult to solve. This book is also a secret room murder, which is beyond imagination, with twists and turns at the end and endless aftertaste. This work is one of the works that I associate most recently, but there is no fair competition among the intermediate authors to some extent.

★ 176, four hearts (1938)

This story is more story-telling, which can be said to be very complicated, but the motive is ... the gap is relatively large, which makes people a little depressed, and the murderer has not been found yet. I don't know if I can't do it or if they cheat.

★ 18, Longya (1939)

The story was obviously influenced by Hollywood, and I pointed out the murderer almost effortlessly because the clues were too obvious. Quinn's level did decline during this period, but he was greatly influenced by Hollywood, and some of them were not very focused on creation.

★ 19, magic lamp (1940)

This is a novella, which tells the story of a trick about the disappearance of a house. It should be said that this is a very gorgeous performance. Although I almost missed it in advance (all kinds of comics and Japanese novels), I still have a good sense of reading. This is a great novel!

★20. Fierce Town (1942)

Quinn's masterpiece The Transformation is also one of his later masterpieces. The plot of this story is tortuous and bizarre, predicting more ways to kill people, and the identity replacement killing method is even more overwhelming.

★2 1, once there was an old woman (1943)

This work is nothing like the work after transformation. Quinn may lack the innocence of the golden age. Complete puzzles, nursery rhymes, castle-like killings, bizarre twists and turns, unexpected endings. (Typical Quinn accident, I didn't see through it ...)

★22. Surprise for ten days (1948)

A very interesting work, involving religion, English crossword puzzles, world outlook and many other factors, and perfectly integrated together. It is also a major turning point in Quinn's career! This had a great influence on Quinn's later life and investigation, and was often mentioned in his later works.

★23. Nine-tailed Cat (1949)

It should be said that this novel conforms to all the characteristics of Quinn's later period and is a typical masterpiece of his later period. A serial killer is a horror that will never disappear. A serial killer can scare the whole city. Criminal psychology, serial killers, many incisive arguments, and the change of Quinn's mental attitude (due to the influence of Ten Days of Surprise) are the highlights of this book!

★24. The king is dead (1952)

Impossible crime's masterpiece! In full view, the cannon was fired outside the secret room, but the "king" in the secret room was shot and killed. There is no paranormal phenomenon, no unexplained things, believe this and believe in your own reasoning! This book is BT in some places, which makes me a little depressed. On the whole, it's good.

★25. Crime Calendar Short Stories Collection (1952)

Lively character composition, rigorous reasoning, very good short stories.

★26. Glass Village (1954)

A very plain article, no outstanding puzzles, no shocking scenes, and relatively plain tricks.

★27. Opponent player (1963)

It should be said that it is a very good article. And a Japanese writer I quite like also tried this model, but there are also some psychological works similar to BT. In contrast, this book is mysterious, weird and attractive, which makes me uncertain in the end.

★28, and then the eighth day (1964)

This is a more prosaic case. But reasoning is no longer the main thing. This book is full of strange ethereal breath, a story of inexplicably coming to Xanadu. Full of imagination.

★29. Face to face (1967)

It's also boring, a little noisy, but I was moved by Quinn's deep affection for father and son!

Basically, ellery queen's works in China have been introduced here, but this is far from over. Many of Quinn's classic works, such as The Egyptian Cross, The Edge of Evil, Black Fox and The Last Strike, have not been introduced by mainland publishing houses. I hope that domestic publishers will continue to work hard. And we readers, just enjoy the fun of reasoning brought by Quinn!

As we all know, ellery queen is three years behind Van Dine. 1929, he landed in the detective fiction world with his debut novel The Mystery of the Comet's Roman Hat. In addition to the two of them, Darcy Lu hammett, regarded as the ancestor of the Cold School, also published Harvest Blood in 1929. It is in this era that American detective stories, which have long been willing to follow the footsteps of English novels, began to rise.

After Van Dine's death, Darcy Lou hammett also wrote. Ellery is the only one who continues to be active in the creation of EQMM magazine.

In the first decade, ellery wrote a series of nine articles on the theme of country names. His first title was The Mystery of Japanese Fans, which was published in a magazine, with a total of 10 articles.

His works are colorful and unique. Compared with the older generation of writers, they are not inferior at all. Therefore, they are not only loved by the world, but also maintain a high standard. His tragedy Y and this novel are rated as comparable to Van Dine's The Bishop's Murder. Van Dine once said: "It is not easy to make readers feel abstruse and interesting about the structure of detective novels, but ellery has made an amazing breakthrough in this respect." Visible Van Dine push special to him.

In fact, the name ellery queen is a pseudonym shared by two cousins, Mambret Lee and Frederick Daniel. Both of them were born in America on 1909. Ellery queen is a clever and keen detective in their works, which is highly appreciated by readers. In view of this, they wrote many works together, such as The Mystery of French White Powder and The Mystery of Dutch Shoes. When their masterpiece The Mystery of the Egyptian Cross came out, ellery queen had become a famous great writer and detective.

The following are ten famous works of reasoning:

First of all, the mysterious Roman hat

Second, the French white powder mystery (francciappartment powder mystery)

Third, the mystery of Dutch shoes

Fourth, the mystery of Greek coffins.

Verb (abbreviation for verb) The mystery of the Egyptian cross

Six, the mystery of American guns

Seven, the secret of Siam twins (twin mystery)

Eight, China orange mystery.

Nine, the mystery of the Spanish shawl

Ten, the Japanese fan mystery (compartment door)

Among the above ten works, the third and fifth works are the most praised. This series of country names not only have the same title, but also maintain a high level of content, breaking through the pattern of American detective novels. It can be said that the waves behind the Yangtze River push the waves ahead.

Ellery's works are similar to Van Dine's, but this is not plagiarism, but another challenge. A writer without real skills would never dare to make such a bold attempt, which shows that ellery's affirmation of his writing is also a challenge to his predecessors.

These books have a common feature, that is, "challenging readers." Before the end of the whole case, the author provides the reader with the key to solve the puzzle, so that the reader can find out the culprit and fight with the author. Therefore, his novels must have a reasonable and coherent structure, and readers must have the feeling of being there. This will not only make readers feel involved, but also be a wonderful formula for the climax of the case. In this case, isn't ellery's reasoning admirable, from Megara's pipe to the blue bottle with a label at the end of the mountain hut?

Ellery is really extraordinary, which not only creates the tension of traditional detective novels, but also creates many distinctive but vivid characters. Just like the love between the lovely old police officer and Aiko in this novel; Professor Adori, who is old but childlike, and the grumpy Bonn police officer are all very human. The author not only deals with cases with big themes, but also shows his relaxed and humorous side with clever pens. This is a breakthrough and an innovation. I believe this kind of mystery novel will have more and more readers.

I hope I can help you ~
