An overview of Taoist missionary work

Taoism in China is mainly divided into "orthodoxy" and "Quanzhen School". Among them, Quanzhen religion accepts the ceremony of new people becoming Taoist priests, which is called "preaching the precepts".

Those who have been preached by Quanzhen Sect and obtained the "clean precepts" have obtained the identity and qualifications of Quanzhen Taoist priests recognized by Taoism.

1989, Beijing Baiyun Temple opened an altar to give lectures, which was the first time that Quanzhen Taoism gave lectures in China after 1949. Since then, the publicity activities have gradually become institutionalized and normalized. According to the above Regulations, Quanzhen Taoist meets the following conditions:

(1) converted to the three treasures of "Tao, Jing and Shi", and there was a traditional school of law study;

(2) Be patriotic and love teaching, be law-abiding, clean and tidy, and be physically and mentally healthy;

(3) You must be over 20 years old, have a junior high school education or above, have been a monk for more than three years, have hair and a big collar, and can recite the morning and evening classics. I voluntarily agreed to inspect my palace;

(4) There must be proof of identity and letters of recommendation from local Taoist associations and local temples, which shall be reviewed and recommended by local provincial Taoist associations. Areas where Taoist associations have not been established can be recommended by local temples and reported to higher Taoist associations for review.

Above, the "quasi-Taoist" who is ready to be ordained is also called the "abstainer". Quanzhen lecture activities must be carried out in the approved Taoist temple. Specifically, these palaces and temples should meet the following conditions:

(1) A Taoist activity place registered by the government;

(two) sound organization, strict management and pure style;

(3) A respected abbot was appointed as a preacher;

(4) Have the ability to hold preaching and preaching activities;

(5) Having legal living facilities such as temples, zhaitang and squatter houses required for missionary activities;

(6) There are instruments and classics awarded to ordained monks;

(7) Necessary expenses for missionary activities. The missionary activities of Quanzhen religion must be presided over by "eight great masters", namely, the master who quit the altar, the master who supervised the ring, the master who protected the ceremony, the master who was righteous, the master who Tico, the master who visited you and the master who invited people.

The above eight masters should meet the following conditions:

(1) Love your country and religion, and abide by the law;

(2) Having received three precepts;

(3) Abide by the precepts and be familiar with Taoist rituals;

(4) consulting ancient books can enlighten and learn from later generations;

(5) Having been a monk for ten years and having been ordained for more than three years.

The division of labor of the eight masters is:

Master Zheng Meng: Responsible for the interpretation of scriptures, scriptures and rituals of abstinence (that is, ordained monks).

◇ Inviting the Lord: also known as "welcoming the Lord". Responsible for presiding over abstinence and fasting ceremonies and serving as a senior official.

◇ Advocacy master: generally held by the prison of the jungle, responsible for recommending the precepts to participate in the precepts.

◇ Ceremony Master: Responsible for teaching the ceremony of stepping on the rules and giving way to the altar.

◇ Main corrector: responsible for correcting etiquette norms for rings.

◇ Master Tico: Responsible for abstaining from the altar, chanting scriptures and worshiping Buddha.

Master Deng Chuan: responsible for obtaining the name of the ring and filling in the "true biography" (that is, the roster compiled by ranking after the ring altar is announced).

◇ Inviting the Lord: also known as "welcoming the Lord". Responsible for presiding over abstinence and fasting ceremonies and serving as a senior official.

In addition, every time a sermon is given, there must be a preacher (also called "teacher" and "lawyer") present, and the preacher's abbot is responsible for preaching and teaching precepts, that is, the general person in charge of the activities of the preacher. Among them, the preacher, the witness and the environmental supervisor, also known as the "three divisions" of the ring, are the three main hosts of the ring. Quanzhen Daoist activities usually include the following procedures: raising a flag, posting a list, opening an altar, fetching water, playing dirty, welcoming teachers, inviting saints, wishing generals, performing rituals, testing precepts, taking exams, chanting scriptures, saying precepts, teaching clothes, issuing precepts, worshiping God and returning.

◎ Yang Zan: The preaching activity started with the grand "Yang Zan Yike", aiming to swear to the gods of heaven and earth that the temple will soon open an altar to preach the precepts and ask for good care.

◎ Posting list: Post and read the list, and announce the opening ceremony of a famous Taoist temple in the four corners of the world, who is the abbot in charge of the ring and what is the significance of opening the ring.

◎ Dull: This is what large scientific instruments have just started to do. Please sprinkle the altar with divine water and tell the gods with scientific instruments to ask for the protection of the ten altars.

◎ Welcome to the teacher: Set up an altar and Taoist temple. All the people and monks attending the altar welcomed the abbot to the altar to preside over the lecture in the form of a grand ceremony.

◎ Performance ceremony: Give priority to the host of the performance ceremony, demonstrate the rules and etiquette for the altar, and the use and holding methods of the utensils, utensils and crown clothes issued by the altar.

◎ Discipline inspection: Before the mage came to the altar, he swore an alliance with all the disciplines face to face according to the rules and regulations. In class, he asked one by one if the commandments could be observed. If you don't behave firmly, you can't pass the exam, and you can't stay in the ring and take part in the activities of preaching the precepts.

◎ Examination: The examination questions are preset by Tan Jie, and the main purpose is to assess literary talent. Through this program, the masters can understand the temperament and ambition of Jiezi, so as to carry out the follow-up training of Taoist talents. At the end of the exam, rank according to the order of "thousands of words".

◎ Talking about precepts: The most important thing to talk about precepts is "talking about precepts". The so-called preaching itself is to teach abstainers the precepts and help them understand them. Usually, the abbot of Gongguan (also known as the abbot of Quanzhen Sect) acts as a preaching lawyer and speaks on the altar in person.

◎ Release the "net commandment". From then on, a "quasi-Taoist" was officially upgraded to a Taoist, and was recognized and accepted in the door. According to article 12 of the regulations on preaching precepts for Quanzhen Taoists, "The preaching of precepts shall be based on the three precepts in Chu Jie Zhen, namely, three conversions, five precepts, ten precepts and nine precepts of Jurchen. Refer to "Middle Ji Jie" and "Tianxianjie" as reserve commandments. "
