There is no mention of Guan Yu's occupation in The Romance of Three Kingdoms. Guan Yu fled from his hometown to Zhuo Jun in Youzhou in his early years because of crime, and sold dates on his way to escape.

Guan Yu was a famous soldier in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. When Liu Bei started his army, Guan Yu followed Liu Bei and was loyal and trusted by Liu Bei. Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and others entered Shu, and Guan Yu guarded Jingzhou. After Liu Bei captured Hanzhong, Guan Yu took advantage of the situation to explore Wei. He besieged Xiangfan, escaped from the Forbidden City, beheaded Pound, threatened China, and the Central Plains shook, but Wu Dong attacked Jingzhou, and Guan Yu was defeated and killed.
