1, confidentiality principle
Hippocrates swore in the 4th century BC: "Whatever I see and hear about other people's lives, whether I have business relations or not, should not be known to the outside world. I will keep silent and regard it as an inviolable secret."
In psychological counseling, there are two exceptions to confidentiality, that is, visitors who have suicidal thoughts and plans and visitors who have thoughts and plans that endanger society must inform their relatives. The rest of the information is confidential.
Do not disclose the personal information of the helper. When writing articles, consultants need to use case materials and discuss with their supervisors. All personal information about visitors is hidden or used under pseudonyms.
Confidentiality is the basis of developing active consultation alliance with visitors and the key factor of building trust and security with visitors. Only in this supportive environment will visitors be willing to open their hearts.
2. Avoid multiple relationships.
In psychological counseling, apart from the relationship between the counselor and the visitor, no other relationship can be developed (in the United States, no other relationship will be developed for life, but in China, it can be developed after three years of counseling). Counselors can't fall in love with visitors. If the counselor falls in love with the visitor and can't handle this emotion well, he must be referred, that is, to other counselors. Counselors must never show their love to visitors.
Many times visitors regard consultants as "higher" than themselves, which is similar to the role of "teacher" and "wise man". Some consultants feel superior to visitors and have the illusion of holding power, such as consultants in a hospital in Qingdao. This is a violation of boundaries.
Crossing the border (such as intimate relationship or sexual relationship with visitors) reflects that the consultant is no longer responsible for the consulting relationship, and it is a terrible thing that the consultant does not perceive or pay attention to his own problems and turns his back on empathy. In this case, it is actually a crime to get your own satisfaction by hurting the interests of tourists.
In some well-connected counseling, the relationship between counseling and visiting is not two-way like friendship, and both sides can exchange feelings without reservation. Although some factors in consulting relationship are the same as friendship, such as openness, respect and support, this is not and will never become friendship. It is a tool to promote visitors' change. Although consultants may also benefit from this relationship, this is not the main goal of consulting.
Ethics is for observation.
Psychological counseling is covert because of its secrecy.
Good counselors are unlikely to be advertised. Even if there are, some visitors introduce their counselors because they are sensitive to them when they know that people around them need them. This is also in a very small range.
On the other hand, when visitors meet an irregular and pathological psychological counselor, they know that their interests have been violated, and they are not very quiet, because they don't want others to know that they have sought the help of psychological counseling and they have psychological problems.
This gives those unqualified consultants confidence. Few professions need a high degree of self-discipline and integrity and healthy personality like psychological counselors.
