What are the employment prospects of BIM practitioners?

At present, the next 3-5 years will still be an era in which a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend in China. Consulting companies and software vendors are developing and popularizing BIM according to their own ideas. At the same time, with the gradual introduction of national standards, the awareness of all units to integrate and promote BIM has gradually strengthened, and the era of BIM synergy is bound to come. At present, the so-called BIM talents on the market are also uneven. In the future, three types of talents will be gradually clarified and recognized by enterprises.

One is the modeler of BIM (including model maintenance), and the application of BIM should start with the creation of the model after all. Therefore, whether it is a design institute, an owner or a construction unit. Whether hiring an external consulting company or cultivating your own BIM team, the maintenance of the model is essential. This kind of talent is the most on the market. After several months of training, you can make a model according to the drawings and requirements. However, such talents may become technical services with the popularization of BIM technology in the future, with low threshold and low income.

One is the implementation talents of BIM, just like the information implementation talents we usually talk about. If BIM is regarded as an information system, the implementers need to formulate an implementation plan for the project, communicate with external cooperation units on behalf of Party A, organize and coordinate relevant special meetings, effectively control the implementation plan, ensure that the BIM implementation plan based on the project achieves the expected effect, and summarize the corresponding implementation experience and ideas. This kind of talents should not only master the professional knowledge related to BIM, but also understand the business and have the ability to organize and implement management. Generally speaking, learn to build a bridge between BIM technology and enterprise management, and learn to use BIM technology to implement project management. Such talents are the scarcest at present.

There is another kind of talent. Personally, depending on the collaborative application value of BIM, from the height of enterprise information strategy, it belongs to the level of enterprise BIM strategic director to use BIM system to rebuild and optimize the organizational form, job responsibilities and workflow of enterprises. In my last article, I mentioned the strategy of promoting BIM in construction enterprises, which mentioned three steps of BIM implementation: functional application, project application and enterprise application. In fact, corresponding to the above three types of talents, the enterprise-level application level is the last type of talents I mentioned, from simple productivity to the final production relationship. It is inevitable to need a higher level of compound BIM talents.
