1975, oil was discovered in Shengli Oilfield near Bohai Sea. Because the drilling platform can't drill at sea, it must build dams to drive away seawater before drilling and oil production. To this end, tens of thousands of migrant workers gathered on the beaches of the Yellow River estuary and used trolleys to transport soil to build dams. A few years later, with the help of Jinan Shipyard, Yantai Shipyard and Tianjin University, Gu Xinyi and others finally designed and built China's first offshore oil drilling ship-"Shengli 1".

The construction of "Shengli 1" not only makes people see the vigorous development of petroleum technology, but also enables China to have its own "shallow sea oil navy".

In the early 1980s, with the continuous expansion of offshore oil exploration, a blank area gradually appeared, namely, the extremely shallow sea and intertidal zone in the land-sea transition zone, and any shallow sea oil drilling equipment, even shallow seabed drilling vessels, could not enter.

Gu Xinyi put forward a bold idea: design and build a drilling platform that can walk by itself! Together with researchers from the oil field, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Qingdao Beihai Shipyard, after more than eight years of hard work, he finally completed this unique invention-"Shengli II". During the prototype test alone, the economic benefits of improving work efficiency and saving diesel oil reached more than 3 million yuan.
