Anxian county has been known as "the blessed land in central Jiangxi" since ancient times. Before Qin Dynasty, Anfu belonged to Wu and Chu successively. In 222 BC, the Qin Dynasty established Ancheng and Anping counties in today's Anfu. County governments are located in today's Yantian Town and Zhujiang Township respectively.

In the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, Anping County was one of the eighteen counties in Changyu. Anxian County is a county under the jurisdiction of Changsha County. In the second year of Wu Baoding in the Three Kingdoms (267), Ancheng, Pingdu (in 96 AD, Anping was changed to Pingdu), Yichun, Pingxiang, Xinyu and Yongxin merged to form Ancheng County.
